Nasal Blockage - #20636

Ritika Kumari

Hello Doctor, Hope you're doing well. I need your advice regarding my treatment. I’ve been having nasal blockage and was under treatment at the Railway Hospital. The doctor said I have adenoid growth and a deviated nasal bone, and suggested septoplasty surgery. I wanted to know if it’s safe to go ahead with it, whether it will affect my facial appearance, and what possible disadvantages it might have. I’d be really grateful for your guidance.

Hello Ritika, As you have DVS (Deviated Nasal Septum), please note that it can be surgically corrected without affecting your facial appearance. For the associated symptoms, you may consider Ayurvedic treatment as a supportive option. Regarding adenoid growth, I can suggest some Ayurvedic medications. However, before doing so, kindly provide details of your current symptoms and any medications you are currently taking.

Septoplasty is a common surgical procedure designed to correct a deviated septum, which is often a cause for nasal blockage. In your case, it’s compounded by adenoid growth. The main objective is to provide better airflow through your nostrils and alleviate the symptoms you’re experiencing such as difficult breathing. Generally, this surgery is considered safe and doesn’t change your facial appearance since it mainly focuses on the internal structure of the nose.

However, like any surgical procedure, septoplasty comes with potential risks. While rare, complications might include bleeding, infection, or an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Sometimes, there’s a potential for persistent nasal issues after the surgery, like a continued feeling of congestion, though this isn’t very common. To minimize these risks, carefully selecting an experienced ENT surgeon and adhering to postoperative care instructions is crucial. Make sure to discuss any concerns or pre-existing conditions with your surgeon to ensure the appropriate precautions are taken.

From an ayurvedic perspective, considering non-surgical interventions might also be helpful. Incorporating nasal oiling, or nasya, can support opening up the nasal passages. Anu taila, an Ayurvedic formula, could be used. Lie down comfortably, with your head slightly tilted back, and administer 2-3 drops in each nostril, preferably in the morning. This ritual can help maintain nasal health and reduce blockages.

Furthermore, include practices to balance your doshas. A warm, moist environment can help to liquefy the excess kapha responsible for the blockage. Steam inhalation with medicinal herbs like mint or eucalyptus may contribute significantly to easing the discomfort. Ensure regularity in eating and including nutrition that pacifies kapha such as light, warm, and unctuous foods.

Employ breathing exercises like pranayama to strengthen your respiratory system. Exercises such as anulom vilom and kapalbhati can aid in clearing nasal passages while improving lung capacity.

Before making any final decision regarding surgery or treatment, ensure comprehensive discussion with both your treating surgeon and an Ayurvedic physician. It is vital to choose a path that aligns best with your individual condition and overall health.
