Experiencing persistent acid reflux paired with tongue tingling and swallowing difficulties can be quite bothersome. From an Ayurvedic perspective, such symptoms typically point towards imbalances in the Pitta dosha, which governs the digestive fire. Agni, or digestion, may be compromised, leading to acid buildup and discomfort.

Firstly, let’s address your diet because it plays a significant role in managing acid reflux. It’s essential to avoid foods that increase Pitta, notably spicy, oily, and acidic foods. Instead, favor cooling, Pitta-pacifying foods. Include more of whole grains like barley or quinoa, plenty of green leafy vegetables, and sweet fruits like melons and bananas. You can try to reduce intake of caffeine, chocolate, tomatoes, and vinegar as they can aggravate symptoms.

Drinking warm water throughout the day mixed with a small amount of fennel or cumin seeds can aid digestion. At the same time, avoiding ice-cold drinks and foods is crucial as they might dampen digestive fire. Try to also eat your meals at regular times. This consistency helps synchronize your body’s rhythm and supports optimal digestion.

Sleep is another key factor. Aim for a regular sleep schedule, making sure your head is slightly elevated. This helps prevent stomach acid from reaching the throat, especially after eating a late meal.

Including some breathing exercises (Pranayama) like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) may help soothe the mind and balance Pitta. Also, consider trying meditation which can alleviate stress—a known trigger for acid reflux symptoms.

If you’re noticing persistent symptoms or they worsen, please consult a healthcare professional. Existing symptoms like problematic swallowing should not be ignored as they might need deeper medical evaluation. The Ayurvedic measures can offer relief, but ensuring no severe underlying condition is paramount.
