can i eat curd and milk together - #24485

Violet

I am really confused about something I’ve been eating lately. I’ve had digestion issues for a while, and my stomach feels bloated all the time, like all the time!!! A friend of mine keeps telling me about how great Ayurvedic practices are, and I wanted to try incorporating some of it into my diet. But here’s the thing—can I eat curd and milk together? I love my morning smoothie with both, but I heard it might be bad for digestion, which totally sucks 'cause I have a hard time with my gut as is. My cousin said I shouldn’t mix them cause of the whole curd and milk thing, but honestly, I don't know if that's just an old wives' tale or what. I noticed after having them together, I feel more bloated. Is that linked? I’m just looking for some clarity. Love my curd, love my milk, but what should I really do? Any insights from you all would be super helpful!

Mixing curd and milk is not recommended in Ayurveda due to their contrasting properties. Curd, being a sour product, and milk, which is sweet and heavy, have opposing effects on digestion. When consumed together, they can disturb the digestive fire (agni), leading to issues like bloating, which you seem to be experiencing. Since you already dealing with digestive issues, mixing these isn’t ideal.

In Ayurveda, each food item has attributes, known as Rasa (taste), Virya (potency), and Vipaka (post-digestive effect), affecting how they interact when consumed. Curd and milk, when mixed, can aggravate Kapha dosha, leading to heaviness and bloating. These qualities might be the reason you’re feeling discomfort after consuming them together.

For your smoothies, consider replacing curd or milk with alternatives that complement each other better. You might try using just curd with water or milk with an added pinch of turmeric or ginger powder to aid digestion. Plant-based milk such as almond or coconut milk can be an alternative, especially with curd, ensuring better digestion.

If you love curd and milk separatly, consume them at different times of the day. Have milk in the morning, perhaps flavored with a little cardamom or cinnamon to enhance digestion. Curd is better consumed during lunch, which is generally when your digestive fire is strongest.

Additionally, bloating may also indicate a possible imbalance of Vata dosha. Warming foods and spices such as ginger, cumin or fennel can support digestion. Consistent meal times, staying hydrated with warm water, and avoiding cold or raw foods may also help ease bloating.

By making these small changes to your diet, you might find relief from the bloating and gradually improve your digestion. If symptoms persist, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized approach would be wise.
