can we eat tomato and curd together - #25202

Matthew

I am really confused about something I read online! My cousin was telling me how eating tomato and curd together is really bad and can cause a lot of digestive issues. This got me thinking because I always enjoy having cucumber raita with my tomato salads, right? So, I decided to try it out again and, as usual, mixed my chopped tomatoes into the curd, and it tasted awesome. But then, I felt a bit of acidity later, and now I’m left wondering if it’s really true what people say. Like, can we eat tomato and curd together? I mean, is there any science behind this? I don’t know if it was just a coincidence that I felt weird or if it was actually because of the tomato and curd mix. I really love both, and avoiding one feels like a huge sacrifice! I just don’t want stomach issues. What do you think?

Combining tomato and curd can be a bit of a mixed bag, according to Ayurveda. While both foods can be healthy individually, the combination may not suit everyone, especially if you notice certain digestive issues afterward, like the acidity you mentioned.

In Ayurveda, curd is considered warm and can increase the Pitta dosha, which governs metabolism and digestion. Tomatoes, on the other hand, are also sour and, therefore, can also elevate Pitta. When consumed together, this combination may create an imbalance, especially in those prone to Pitta-related issues like acidity or inflammation.

If you’re experiencing discomfort, you might want to try a few things to see if it helps. First, notice when you consume this combination. Eating it during peak digestion times, like midday when your agni (digestive fire) is strongest, might lessen the impact. You could also try having them separately during different meals to see if there’s a change in how you feel.

To make things more digestible, you might want to add some cumin seeds or black pepper to your tomato and curd preparations. These spices can aid digestion and counteract the acid-forming potential of the mix. Also make sure the curd is fresh and not too sour, as excessively sour curd could aggravate Pitta further.

Lastly, pay attention to your body’s signals. If you notice repeated discomfort, it might be better to enjoy these foods separately. Our constitutions vary, and what works for one person may not for another. Consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized recommendations could also be a good idea. Avoid making drastic changes without understanding your body’s needs – balance is key.
