can we eat curd after drinking alcohol - #25427

Noah

I am really confused about something and need some advice. Last weekend I went out with friends and had a bit too much to drink, like way too much. At the end of the night, someone said I shouldn’t eat curd after drinking alcohol because it could upset my stomach. I mean, my mom always said that curd is good for digestion, right? But then I started thinking maybe mixing the two is bad? I ended up having some curd with rice the next day, and I felt fine, but I can't shake off this worry. I didn't get sick or anything, but then I read online that can we eat curd after drinking alcohol could lead to issues like bloating or tummy aches. I’ve also had gastro issues in the past, so I'm super cautious about what I eat, especially after a night of drinking. Anyone have insights on this? Should I steer clear of curd when I’ve been drinking? Thx in advance for any tips!

Let’s talk about consuming curd after alcohol, based on Ayurvedic principles. Essentially, there’s no direct, absolute contraindication in Ayurveda that says curd should not be eaten after alcohol. However, we should consider the qualities of both substances according to Ayurvedic teachings.

Curd is traditionally recognized as having certain properties - it’s sour, heavy, and heating (ushna). It can be quite nourishing and beneficial for digestion when consumed in moderation and appropriately. However, drinking alcohol also has heating and intoxicating qualities, it can disrupt your digestive fire (agni), and this could lead to an imbalance, particularly if consumed excessively.

The concern with combining alcohol and curd primarily arises because both can be heavy on digestion, especially if the digestive fire is weakened after indulgence. If you’ve had tummy troubles in the past, this combination might aggravate issues like bloating, indigestion, or an upset stomach, depending on your unique constitution (prakriti) and the current state of your digestive health.

That said, with your history of gastric issues, it’s wise to approach this carefully. Eating curd the next day (like you did with rice) might not cause immediate issues if your agni was stable. However, to maintain balance, it might be advisable to avoid combining these two in close succession; instead, perhaps opt for lighter, easier-to-digest foods initially post-drinking – like soupy khichdi or simple dal.

If you choose to eat curd, opt for fresh, homemade curd that’s mixed with spices like cumin or ginger to aid digestion, and consume it during mid-day, when agni is most robust. Ensuring balance with the seasonal dietary rules and portion control is key. Always listen to your body, observe how it reacts, and adjust your intake accordingly.

Remember that every individual’s response can vary greatly, so observe thoughtfully how your body responds to different food combinations, and adjust to prevent discomfort. And if you are ever uncertain about specific combinations or experiences, consultations with an Ayurvedic practitioner can offer personalized guidance.
