can we take triphala with milk - #25619

Abigail

I am really confused about this triphala thing. A few weeks ago, I started using triphala for my digestion issues, which were really bothering me for quite some time. I found out it’s supposed to help with everything from detoxing to regularizing bowel movements. Anyway, I heard somewhere that triphala can be taken with milk, but I’m not sure if that's true or not. Last night, I decided to mix triphala powder with warm milk after dinner, thinking it might be soothing before bed or something. But I woke up with this weird bloating and felt kind of off. I mean, can we take triphala with milk, or was that a bad idea? I know some folks have different opinions about mixing things. My friend said it's a great combo, while others said it could mess with triphala's benefits, like neutralizing it or something? I really don't want to mess this up, ya know? Anyone have experiences or guidance on can we take triphala with milk? Thanks!!

Taking Triphala with milk is a bit tricky and has its pros and cons depending on your individual body constitution and digestive capacity. In classical Ayurveda, Triphala, which is a powerful combination of three fruits - Amla, Haritaki, and Bibhitaki - is most commonly recommended with water or honey. It is revered for its ability to detoxify the system, improve digestion, and promote regular bowel movements among other benefits.

Now, about mixing it with milk, traditionally, Triphala is not taken with milk. Milk is considered a heavy substance in Ayurveda and when combined with Triphala, which is aimed at detoxifying and promoting digestion, it can indeed lead to some digestive discomfort or bloating as you experienced. This is because the cooling nature of milk can sometimes interfere with the effectiveness of Triphala’s action.

However there are exceptions. If one has a strong digestive fire (agni), which can thoroughly digest the combination, or has a vata dosha (where sleep disturbances or irregular digestion is prominent), then taking triphala with milk might be beneficial occasionally, particularly for inducing calm and sleep.

If you’re facing bloating, considering returning to taking triphala with warm water or directly consuming the powder with a bit of honey, especially in the evening before bed. This tends to be a lighter way to use Triphala, aligning more closely with its traditional application. Monitor your symptoms, and if bloating or discomfort continues, it’s wise to consult with a practitioner directly to tailored to your specific dosha or digestive needs.

Remember, everyone’s body responds differently, and such combinations can have varied effects. Consider also if there were any other dietary or lifestyle factors contributing to the bloating you experienced. It might be useful to track any other changes you’ve made recently.
