Caring for a little one with cough and runny nose can be tough. At 14 months, it’s important to be gentle with remedies, especially in Ayurveda where the focus is balancing their delicate system. Children’s constitution is still developing so you wanna avoid anything that’s too hot or too cold for her small doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) system, coz that might cause imbalance.
For starters, there’s a simple and effective remedy—Turmeric milk. Make a small amount, maybe a half cup, warm cow’s milk with just a pinch of turmeric powder. Mix it in well. Give it to her a little warm, not hot. Turmeric is great for respiratory issues and cold symptoms, and milk provides comfort.
Next, think about ginger. Fresh ginger juice can work wonders, but for a tiny one, you need only a drop or two. Mix with a bit of honey, wait until she’s at least one year as honey shouldn’t be given to babies younger. This combo can soothe the throat and support the immune system.
Lets talk about Tulsi (Holy Basil), another amazing herb for coughs. If you can get fresh leaves, smashing a few to extract juice and mix with water can be useful. Again just a drop or two, careful about not overdoing it—mildness is key.
It’s also good to encourage hydration, warm water with a a lil’ pinch of cumin can help too. Ensuring that her “agni”, or digestive fire, is not burdened will be important. No heavy foods, prefer liquids like warm, thin soups made with mung dal (moong) might comfort and heal.
Remember, while these remedies are generally safe, every child is unique. Keep a close watch and if things do not improve or gets worse, don’t hesitate to consult with a pediatrician or a local Ayurvedic practitioner. Rely on that intuition and all will be well!
