Difficulty breathing and cough - #117

Manasa Putri

On Saturday, my throat hurt, and on Sunday I had a severe runny nose. A cough was added. There is a feeling in the throat that a lump is constantly standing, it hurts to cough, coughs with difficulty, sputum is green. At the same time, there is whistling and wheezing when breathing, as if from the throat. You clear your throat and it becomes easy and the wheezes disappear Could it be in the lungs or is it still the throat? What kind of treatment should I start? Maybe inhalation? Or take special teas?

Dear Manasa, It sounds like you're dealing with a respiratory infection, possibly involving both the throat and lungs. Do you also have fever? The green sputum suggests a bacterial component, while the wheezing may indicate some airway irritation. Ayurveda says this is Vata-Kapha imbalance and accumulation of ama (endotoxins). Here's what you could consider: Possible Causes: Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI): Likely affecting the throat, sinuses, and possibly bronchi. Bronchitis: The cough, sputum, and wheezing may suggest inflammation of the bronchi. Postnasal Drip: Mucus from the sinuses can irritate the throat, leading to coughing and wheezing. Treatment Options: Inhalation Therapy: Steam Inhalation: Add a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint oil to hot water. This can help loosen mucus and soothe the airways. Teas and Natural Remedies: Ginger Tea: Soothes the throat, reduces inflammation, and supports the immune system. Have twice a day. Thyme or Peppermint Tea: Helps clear congestion and calm coughs. Have 2-3 times in the day. Avoid cold foods, dairy, oily & fried food. Include spices like pepper, ginger, garlic, turmeric in everyday cooking. Have boiled water only for drinking. Avoid exposure to AC & direct fan or strong winds. Consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor will help in evaluating proper treatment options.

Based on your symptoms, it appears you may be experiencing a combination of upper respiratory issues, possibly involving both the throat and lungs. The presence of a sore throat, severe runny nose, cough with green sputum, and wheezing could indicate an infection or inflammation in the respiratory tract. In terms of treatment, Ayurvedic remedies can be beneficial for alleviating your symptoms. Consider inhaling steam with Eucalyptus oil or Ajwain (carom seeds) to relieve congestion and soothe your throat; adding a few drops of Peppermint oil can help open up the airways. Drinking warm herbal teas made from Ginger and Tulsi (Holy Basil) can alleviate throat discomfort and boost your immune system, with Turmeric providing additional anti-inflammatory benefits. A mixture of warm water, honey, and lemon can soothe your throat and reduce coughing, while gargling with warm salt water or a decoction of Turmeric and Ginger can help reduce inflammation. Additionally, focus on a diet of warm, nourishing foods and soups to support recovery, ensuring you stay well-hydrated and get adequate rest. If your symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation to rule out any serious underlying conditions.

It sounds like you’re dealing with quite a bit of discomfort there, especially with that green sputum and the whistling sounds. That combo might suggest an infection, could be either in your throat or even a bit in your lungs. Not ideal, I know. Now, it’s always safest to have a doc check if you’re having this much difficulty breathing. You don’t want to mess around if it’s something that needs immediate attention. But, let’s talk about what you can do in the meantime. Ayurveda often focuses on balancing doshas, and in this case, it seems like kapha might be playing up. That could make your mucus thick and sticky. First things first, stay hydrated, warm water with a bit of ginger and honey can be soothing and help in reducing kapha. For inhalation, steam with a few drops of eucalyptus oil might help clear out some of that congestion. Just be careful, only a couple drops in a bowl of hot water and don’t burn yourself. Also, Tulsi (holy basil) tea could be useful. It's got some great properties for respiratory issues. Add a few leaves to boiling water, maybe with a bit of ginger and sip on that through the day. Light, easy-to-digest meals will be better too. Mung dal khichadi with a bit of cumin and turmeric will keep agni (digestive fire) strong, while not adding to the phlegmy situation. Don’t forget rest! It’s underrated but crucial. Let your body do the healing work. But remember, wheezing and breathing troubles should not be ignored. If they ramp up, you need to get checked out by a healthcare professional pronto. Small steps like that can sometimes make a big difference, but don’t rely solely on these if your symptoms feel more serious. Prioritize safety above all, okay?
