What to do for lower back pain - #174

Kavya

Hello, I have pain in the lumbar spine when standing for a long time, lifting weights and bending, sometimes it hurts in my right hip. It doesn't hurt when I'm sitting or lying down, and it doesn't hurt at night. There is also pain in the cervical spine, the fingers on the right hand go numb at night, and when you turn over on the other side, you feel a rush of blood and numbness goes away. 9 years ago I had cervical cancer, could it be related to this?

Your symptoms of lumbar spine pain, discomfort in the right hip, and cervical spine pain accompanied by numbness in your fingers may be indicative of musculoskeletal issues, possibly exacerbated by your previous history of cervical cancer. It’s essential to consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation, especially considering your medical history. In Ayurveda, to help manage your symptoms, you can consider using Boswellia (Boswellia serrata), which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to support joint health. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) can also be beneficial for reducing stress and muscle tension. Additionally, incorporating Turmeric (Curcuma longa) into your diet may provide further anti-inflammatory benefits. Gentle stretching, yoga, and warm oil massages with Mahanarayan oil can also help improve flexibility and alleviate pain in the affected areas. It's important to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs.

Given your symptoms in the lumbar and cervical spine, it sounds like there might be a few things interacting here. The lumbar pain when you're standing or lifting weights could be due to something like a Vata imbalance. Vata dosha tends to dry out and weaken the bones and joints, leading to discomfort in weight-bearing or strenuous activities. Incorporating warming and grounding exercises like gentle yoga or swimming might help stabilize this. Also, consider nightly oil massages using warm sesame oil, focusing on the lower back, which might provide some relief. Regarding the numbness and rush of blood in your hand, this could relate to compression or slight pinching of nerves in the cervical region. Given your history with cervical cancer, it's vital to consult a healthcare professional to make sure there aren't any underlying complications related to that. But also, this sounds like possible Kapha stagnation or an aggravation leading to sluggish circulation. Stimulating circulation with ginger tea, consumed daily, may help in invigorating circulation and warming up the body. Diet can play a role in easing these symptoms, too. Aim for foods that balance Vata and boost circulation, and help reduce inflammation - cooked, warm meals with spices like turmeric, cumin, and fennel may be beneficial. Remember, simplicity is key in meals to aid digestion and nurture agni (digestive fire). It's reassuring that there's no pain when you're sitting or lying down, but that you mentioned numbness when sleeping, indicates some positional pressure or strain. Sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees might help align the spine and reduce stress on both the cervical and lumbar areas. Definitely make sure to continue monitoring the condition with your doctor, especially considering your previous cancer treatment. Ayurveda integrates beautifully with modern medicine, and combining the two can provide the most robust approach to addressing your pain and numbness. Stay safe, and take good care of yourself!
