nose - #17998

Anonymously

For the past couple of months, I’ve been dealing with this weird issue with my nose. It’s always either blocked or runny, like there’s no in-between. Some days, I wake up and my nose is so stuffed up that I have to breathe through my mouth, which makes my throat dry and scratchy. Other days, it just won’t stop running, and I have to keep tissues with me all the time. It’s super annoying, especially in the mornings and at night. I thought it was just a seasonal allergy, but it’s been going on for too long now. I tried antihistamines, steam inhalation, and even changed my pillow covers regularly to see if it was dust-related. But nothing has really fixed it. My nose sometimes feels dry inside, but at the same time, there’s excess mucus coming out?? It’s confusing. Also, I’ve noticed I get frequent sneezing fits, especially when I step out in the sun or if I smell strong perfumes. One of my friends told me about Ayurveda and how it has natural treatments for respiratory issues. I’ve heard of Nasya therapy, where you put oil in your nose, but I have no idea how that works or if it’s safe to do at home. Does it actually help with long-term relief? Are there specific herbs or Ayurvedic remedies that can stop this constant nose problem? Also, is my diet affecting this? I do eat a lot of dairy, especially milk at night, so could that be making my nose congestion worse? I really want to fix this naturally because I’m tired of depending on nasal sprays and medicines that only give temporary relief. Would love to hear if anyone has tried Ayurveda for chronic nose issues and what actually worked.

Your symptoms—constant nasal congestion or runny nose, dry nasal passages, excessive mucus, sneezing fits, and worsening in the morning/night—suggest an imbalance in Kapha and Vata dosha, leading to Chronic Rhinitis or Allergic Rhinitis (Vata-Kaphaja Pratishyaya) in Ayurveda. Since antihistamines and steam inhalation haven’t given lasting relief, Ayurveda focuses on clearing excess Kapha, strengthening nasal passages, and balancing Vata. Nasya therapy (herbal oil drops in the nose) is highly effective for long-term relief, as it lubricates dry nasal tissues, reduces congestion, and clears blockages. You can start with Anu Taila or Shadbindu Taila (2 drops in each nostril every morning) after steam inhalation for better absorption. Diet plays a major role in chronic nasal issues, and excessive dairy, cold foods, and heavy, mucus-forming foods (curd, processed sugar, fried foods) can worsen congestion. Reduce dairy intake, especially milk at night, and replace it with warm herbal teas like tulsi, ginger, or mulethi tea. Incorporate spices like black pepper, turmeric, and cinnamon in your meals to balance Kapha and clear excess mucus. Ayurvedic remedies such as Sitopaladi Churna (½ tsp with honey twice daily) and Haridrakhand are excellent for reducing allergic reactions and improving respiratory health. Chewing a small piece of clove or ajwain before stepping into cold air can help prevent sneezing fits. Since your symptoms worsen in the morning and night, follow a Kapha-balancing routine by waking up early, performing Jal Neti (nasal cleansing with saline water) to remove excess mucus, and practicing Pranayama (especially Bhastrika and Anulom Vilom) to strengthen respiratory function. Avoid strong artificial scents and dusty environments as they trigger sneezing. With regular Nasya therapy, dietary adjustments, and Ayurvedic herbs, you should start experiencing noticeable relief within 3-4 weeks, with long-term improvement over time. Let me know if you need specific guidance!

It sounds like you're dealing with chronic nasal congestion, which could be due to an imbalance in your body's internal systems, especially the Kapha dosha in Ayurveda. The congestion, runny nose, and sneezing could be related to excess mucus or Ama (toxins) in the body. Ayurveda offers several natural ways to address this condition, and one of the best approaches is Nasya therapy. Nasya involves using medicinal oils, such as Anu Taila or Sesame oil, to lubricate and cleanse the nasal passages, which can help alleviate congestion and clear excess mucus. It can be done safely at home, but it’s important to start with small amounts and be consistent. In addition to Nasya, certain herbs can be helpful for respiratory issues. Tulsi (holy basil), Trikatu (a combination of ginger, black pepper, and long pepper), and Ginger are known for their ability to clear mucus and balance the respiratory system. You might also try drinking warm ginger and turmeric tea to reduce inflammation and clear mucus. As for diet, dairy, especially at night, is known to exacerbate mucus production, so reducing or eliminating dairy could help reduce the congestion and the feeling of excess mucus. Avoiding cold, heavy, and processed foods and opting for warm, light meals will also help balance Kapha. To manage this condition naturally, Ayurveda would recommend a combination of lifestyle changes like regular oiling, warm drinks, and adjusting your diet. Practices like steam inhalation (with a few drops of eucalyptus oil) and staying hydrated can also support your respiratory health. If you stick to these practices consistently, you may find long-term relief without needing to depend on nasal sprays or medications. It might take a little time, but many people find Ayurveda’s approach effective for chronic nasal issues.
