Knee Pain (Ghutno Ka Dard) - #18054

Anonymously

My mother has been suffering from knee pain for the past four to five years, and it has gotten worse recently. Earlier, the pain was mild and only happened when she walked for too long, but now she struggles even while sitting, standing, or climbing stairs. In the mornings, her knees feel stiff and swollen, and sometimes, the pain becomes so severe that she can’t sleep properly at night. The doctor said she might have arthritis and prescribed painkillers and calcium supplements, but they don’t seem to be working. We have also tried home remedies like turmeric milk, fenugreek water, and sesame oil massage, but the relief is only temporary. I want to know if there is a permanent solution in Ayurveda for knee pain. I have heard that Panchakarma therapy and Janu Basti are beneficial for joint pain. Do these therapies help reduce knee swelling and pain? I am also wondering if diet and lifestyle changes can help with knee pain. Does weight gain put extra pressure on the knees and make the pain worse? What kind of exercises or yoga poses should be followed to strengthen knee joints? Doctor, please suggest some Ayurvedic treatments and medicines for knee pain. Are there herbal oils or supplements that can repair damaged knee joints? Is it possible to cure knee pain permanently through Ayurveda, or will my mother always have to take medicines? I want the best Ayurvedic remedies to naturally reduce my mother’s knee pain and improve her mobility.

It sounds like your mother is dealing with chronic knee pain that is significantly affecting her quality of life. In Ayurveda, chronic joint pain, especially associated with conditions like arthritis, is often linked to an imbalance in the Vata dosha, which governs movement and flexibility in the body. Ayurvedic treatments like Panchakarma therapy and Janu Basti (a localized treatment involving medicated oils applied to the knee area) can indeed help to reduce inflammation, promote circulation, and relieve stiffness and pain in the joints. These therapies work by balancing the doshas and nourishing the affected tissues. Additionally, herbal oils such as Mahanarayan oil or Dashamoola oil can be massaged into the knees to provide pain relief and promote healing. Guggul and Ashwagandha are commonly used supplements that help reduce inflammation and support joint health. Regarding diet and lifestyle, it's important to maintain a balanced weight as excess weight puts additional strain on the knees, worsening the pain. A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric, ginger, and omega-3 fatty acids (found in flaxseeds and fish) can help reduce joint inflammation. Yoga poses such as Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose), Vrikshasana (Tree Pose), and Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) can strengthen the muscles around the knee joint and improve mobility. In terms of a permanent solution, Ayurveda offers long-term relief by addressing the root cause of the pain and improving joint health, though consistent treatment and lifestyle changes are necessary. While it may not completely replace the need for occasional medications, Ayurveda can significantly reduce reliance on painkillers and improve your mother’s mobility and quality of life over time.

Knee pain, especially when it worsens over time, is often linked to osteoarthritis (Sandhigata Vata in Ayurveda) or inflammation due to Ama (toxins) buildup in the joints. Since your mother has been suffering for several years and now experiences stiffness, swelling, and severe pain, it indicates Vata aggravation, which weakens the joints and cartilage. While painkillers provide temporary relief, Ayurveda aims for long-term healing by strengthening the joints, improving lubrication, and reducing inflammation. Yes, Panchakarma therapies like Janu Basti (a medicated oil therapy for the knees) and Abhyanga (full-body massage with warm herbal oils) can be highly effective. Janu Basti helps by deeply nourishing the joints with medicated oils like Mahanarayan or Dhanwantharam Thailam, reducing pain and improving flexibility. Basti (medicated enema therapy) is another powerful treatment for chronic knee pain, as it helps eliminate excess Vata from the body and provides deep joint nourishment. Ayurvedic herbs like Shallaki (Boswellia), Guggulu, Ashwagandha, and Turmeric are excellent for reducing inflammation and strengthening knee joints naturally. Diet and lifestyle play a crucial role in managing knee pain. Excess weight puts additional pressure on the knees, worsening pain and joint degeneration. If your mother is overweight, gentle weight management with a Vata-pacifying diet (warm, nourishing foods like moong dal, cooked vegetables, and healthy fats like ghee) can help reduce strain on the joints. Encourage her to avoid cold, processed, and fried foods, as they increase Ama (toxins) and aggravate inflammation. Gentle yoga postures like Vajrasana, Pawanmuktasana, and Sukshma Vyayama (joint rotation exercises) can improve mobility without straining the knees. For daily pain relief and joint repair, regular massage with warm herbal oils (such as Mahanarayan or Bala Ashwagandha oil), Ayurvedic supplements like Dashmool Kwath, Yograj Guggulu, and Rasnadi Churna, and herbal knee packs with turmeric, fenugreek, and castor oil can help. While Ayurveda may not offer an instant cure, consistent Ayurvedic treatments, diet, and lifestyle changes can significantly reduce pain, improve mobility, and even slow down joint degeneration. Let me know if you’d like a personalized Ayurvedic plan for your mother’s knee health!
