Dealing with long-term gastritis can indeed be challenging, especially when conventional treatments seem ineffective. In Ayurveda, we view gastritis as a result of an imbalance in the doshas, primarily Pitta dosha, which governs the digestive fire or 'agni'. An imbalance here leads to inflammation and irritation of the stomach lining. Firstly, it's essential to reassess dietary habits. A Pitta-calming diet is beneficial, which means including more cooling, alkaline foods. Incorporate fresh fruits, like melons and cucumbers, and vegetables like spinach and kale in your diet. Avoid spicy, acidic, or fried foods as these can aggravate Pitta. Ensure that meals are regular, and avoid skipping them as this disturbs agni. To support digestion, I recommend drinking lukewarm water throughout the day. You might also find it helpful to drink herbal teas made with a bit of fennel and chamomile after meals. These herbs have soothing properties that help calm irritation and improve digestion. Ayurveda offers several herbal remedies that can help restore balance. Amalaki (Indian gooseberry) is excellent for soothing the stomach and cooling Pitta. Taking an Amalaki supplement or using it in powder form can be beneficial. Mix 1 teaspoon of Amalaki powder with warm water and take it after meals. The practice of yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises) can't be understated. Gentle yoga poses that focus on the digestive organs and pranayama exercises like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) can help restore balance to your body’s systems. It's also important to address lifestyle habits. Stress can exacerbate gastritis symptoms, so consider integrating meditation or mindful relaxation exercises into your daily routine. A regular sleep schedule can also boost your overall digestive health. If symptoms persist or worsen despite these interventions, it may indicate a more underlying issue requiring medical evaluation. Always prioritize safety, so please consult with a local healthcare professional if needed. Keep in mind, Ayurveda is a complementary approach and should be viewed as a supportive therapy alongside your primary medical treatments.
