Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) can indeed be challenging, especially if traditional medicines have only offered partial relief. Ayurveda offers some unique perspectives in terms of managing symptoms and improving quality of life, though it's crucial to work alongside your mother's current medical regime. Let's focus on what's doable within the Ayurvedic framework. First, understand that ILD is complex and deep-seated condition. In Ayurveda, it often relates to an imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas. Excessive Kapha, you see, can lead to symptoms like cough and throat congestion - while aggravated Vata can contribute to breathlessness. For dietary adjustments, try incorporating warm, easy to digest foods like cooked vegetables and daals. Avoid cold, heavy, oily foods that can aggrevate Kapha. Focus on lighter grains like barley or millet and use spices like ginger, black pepper, and turmeric to support digestion and metabolism. Turmeric, especially, can be quite beneficial due to its anti-inflammatory properties. In terms of lifestyle, encourage regular practice of Pranayama - especially Nadi Shodhana and Bhramari. These breathing techniques help improve lung capacity and balance the doshas. Practicing under supervision initially would be good idea if she's not familiar. HerAgni, or digestive fire, needs to be optimized to ensure that the food she eats is fully digested. If constipation is present, mild Ayurvedic laxatives like Triphala could be beneficial, after consulting with a professional. Additionally, herbal decoctions like Tulsi tea or licorice root tea can offer relief for the throat and stabilize Kapha. However, any new Ayurvedic herbs or supplements must be discussed with her healthcare provider to avoid interactions, especially given her diabetes and other ongoing treatments. To address diabetes induced by steroid usage, diet and lifestyle adjustments specific for balancing blood sugar are necessary. Possibly integrate fenugreek seeds, cinnamon, and neem. Yet again, mindful of her current medications. Regular consultations with both her Ayurvedic practitioner and allopathic doctor is important for a balanced approach. It's about finding that harmony between modalities, permitting Ayurveda to complement her existing treatments for better overall health and comfort.
