Namaste. Thank you for sharing your concern. Hypothyroidism is increasingly common, and while allopathic medicines help manage TSH levels, Ayurveda offers a root-cause approach to support your thyroid function naturally.

In Ayurveda, hypothyroidism is often understood as a Kapha-Vata imbalance affecting Agni (digestive fire) and Rasa-Rakta Dhatus, leading to sluggish metabolism and hormonal irregularities. Diet -warm, light, and easily digestible foods. Avoid cold, heavy, processed foods and dairy, soy, refined sugar, and gluten if sensitivity is suspected. Include iodine-rich natural foods like seaweed (if suitable), rock salt (sendha namak), and drumstick leaves. Use spices like turmeric, ginger, cumin, and black pepper to stimulate metabolism. Wake up early and establish a Dinacharya (daily routine). Practice mild exercise or yoga daily to stimulate circulation and thyroid function (e.g., Surya Namaskar, Matsyasana, Sarvangasana). Manage stress with pranayama and meditation, as chronic stress worsens thyroid function. Kanchanar guggulu- Ashwagandha capsule- 1 tab twice daily after food with warm water

When looking to reduce your thyroid medication, especially after being on it for years, a gradual and cautious approach is best. Ayurveda can support this process, but it’s essential to continue working closely with your healthcare provider to monitor your thyroid levels consistently. In Ayurveda, we focus on balancing the doshas and strengthening the Agni, or the digestive fire, to support overall thyroid health. Let’s dive in to some practical suggestions:

Firstly, diet: emphasize on foods that are wholesome and easy to digest. Freshly prepared meals, rich in seasonal vegetables, fruits, and whole grains are beneficial. Avoid processed and junk food which can disrupt your doshas and impact agni. Favor iodized salt, which is important for thyroid hormone production. Certain foods like cabbage, broccoli should be consumed in moderation as they might interfere with iodine absorption. However, they can be consumed cooked as this reduces potential negative effects on thyroid.

Herbs like Ashwagandha and Guggul have traditionally been used in Ayurveda to balance thyroid function. You might try incorporating them into your routine after consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner. These herbs help in balancing Kapha dosha and also enhance metabolic processes.

Yoga and Pranayama (breathing exercises) also play a key role, poses such as Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand), Matsyasana (Fish Pose) can help stimulate thyroid gland. Pranayama practices like Nadi Shodhan (alternate nostril breathing) and Ujjayi (victorious breath) might benefit in balancing energies and reducing stress, an important factor in thyroid health.

Lifestyle changes like maintaining a regular sleep schedule, reducing stress, and practicing mindfulness can improve your overall well-being. Stress has a very direct effect on thyroid gland, so any measures to reduce stress can positively influence your thyroid.

Keep in mind, while you can definitely use Ayurvedic approaches to support thyroid balance, it is of utmost importance to work with your physician and adjust your medication only under their guidance and after thorough testing of your thyroid levels. Patience is key, and balance is the aim, transitioning off medication may take time!
