how to reduce constipation during pregnancy - #24117

Victoria

I am really struggling with constipation during my pregnancy and it’s driving me nuts! I'm in my second trimester now, and I thought things would be better at this point, but nope. I swear I’m eating more fiber than ever—fruits, veggies, whole grains, the whole deal! Even started juicing, but still, I wake up feeling like a rock. Several weeks ago I checked in with my midwife, and she said it’s pretty common, but I can't help but feel worried because it just feels awful. I mean, how to reduce constipation during pregnancy, right? I’ve tried drinking more water and even going for walks when I can, but nothing seems to really work. I read somewhere about some Ayurvedic remedies but, like, not sure what’s safe to try? Anyone have good advice or natural tricks? I could really use some help here because this is making everything so much harder and ugh, so frustrating!

Constipation during pregnancy can indeed be a real challenge. In Ayurveda, we often see it as a sign of Vata imbalance, particularly Apana Vata, which governs downward movements in the body. Even though you’re doing the right things by consuming fibers and staying hydrated, sometimes our digestive fire, or Agni, can be weak or disturbed, hindering the proper processing of foods. One simple remedy is to start your day with a warm glass of water with a teaspoon of ghee. It acts as a gentle lubricant for the intestines and can also calm Vata dosha. Make sure the water is warm, not hot, as it can enhance the soothing effect. If you’re open to it, you might try a herbal tea made with cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds. These seeds can be taken in equal parts, boiled in water, and consumed after meals — it can help improve digestion and ease constipation symptoms. Another thing to consider is avoiding cold and raw foods. They can aggravate Vata; try to favor cooked and warm meals instead. Also when it comes to fruits, ripened papaya (in moderation) and soaked raisins are quite beneficial. Doing daily yogic practices, especially focusing on poses like Pavanmuktasana, can aid the digestive process. Ensure that any physical activity is comfortable and approves by your healthcare provider. Triphala churna is a classic Ayurvedic remedy that's often recommended for irregular bowels, it might be beneficial for you too. You can mix half a teaspoon of Triphala churna with warm water at night before sleeping. However, always consult your ob-gyn or midwife to ensre its safety during pregnancy. Sleep and stress have a big part in this too, try to have regular sleep pattern, and incorporating deep-breathing practices or gentle meditation could help balance your Vata. If you feel that these aren’t making a significant impact, promptly discuss it with your healthcare providers. Our goal is your safe and comfortable experience during this beautiful journey.
