can we drink pineapple juice during periods - #24172

Levi

I am super confused about what to eat and drink during my periods. I always thought certain foods helped, but my friend was telling me to avoid pineapple juice during this time. I usually get cramps that are just awful, like I can’t even focus at work sometimes. I mean, it’s not all bad—sometimes I try to comfort myself with something sweet, and I really love pineapple juice! But now, with these cramps and everything, I’m just wondering, can we drink pineapple juice during periods? I read that it might actually help with digestion and inflammation, which sounds great. But then there’s this worry if it can do something bad like increase bleeding or make cramps worse…I don’t know! I just don’t wanna make anything worse. Has anyone else dealt with this? Like, how does pineapple juice affect you guys when you’re on your period? Thanks, just trying to figure it all out!

Doctors’ responses

The idea of consuming pineapple juice during periods can seem a bit conflicting, especially with all the differing advice out there. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it's essential to understand how different foods interact with your body, particularly in terms of your unique dosha balance and current symptoms. Pineapple juice is considered to be heating in nature, which means it can potentially increase Pitta dosha. The juice is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties and contains bromelain, an enzyme that can help ease cramps by relaxing muscles and reducing inflammation. For those experiencing Vata dominance—characterized by dryness, coldness, and irregular digestion—pineapple's warmth might be quite beneficial in soothing cramps. However, if you have a Pitta imbalance (which might involve symptoms like heavier bleeding, inflammation, or heat sensations), the heating qualities of pineapple juice could potentially exacerbate these symptoms. Therefore, it's generally advised for Pitta types to consume pineapple juice in moderation, focusing on cooling foods instead. To safely incorporate pineapple juice during your period, consider having it in small quantities, perhaps 1/2 cup, and preferably not on an empty stomach. It's also wise to observe how your body responds. If it seems to worsen cramps or other symptoms, it might be best to avoid it during this time. Besides, addressing your comprehensive diet during your menstrual cycle could offer more relief. Prioritize warm, cooked foods like soups, stews, and herbal teas. Foods like fresh ginger, sesame seeds, and leafy greens may also support your system. Proper hydration and rest are essential too. If your cramps are quite severe, it could be helpful to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner to better understand your specific dosha and get personalized guidance. Also, if the pain becomes overwhelming, seeking conventional medical advice is essential. This balanced approach can help ensure that you navigate your menstrual cycle with greater comfort and ease.
