Persistent Respiratory Symptoms After COVID-19 - #51255

Client_55cc0b

Since having COVID-19 in 2024, I have experienced persistent respiratory symptoms including chronic cough, post-nasal drip, and sticky phlegm production. During that year I was diagnosed with Sinusitis, and sputum cultures have repeatedly shown growth of Haemophilus influenzae. I have completed multiple courses of antibiotics, but the infection and symptoms return soon after each course finishes. I often experience severe coughing fits where I cannot stop coughing, along with ongoing mucus drainage. I also have Multiple Sclerosis and am currently on immunosuppressive medication, which may be affecting my ability to clear infections. These ongoing symptoms are significantly impacting my quality of life, and I am seeking further guidance and evaluation to identify the underlying cause and find a more effective long-term management plan.

How long have you been experiencing these respiratory symptoms?:

- More than 6 months

What triggers your coughing fits?:

- No specific triggers

Possible Underlying Causes 1. Chronic Sinusitis with Post-Nasal Drip Your symptoms strongly suggest persistent sinus infection. Typical signs: Sticky mucus Post-nasal drip into throat Continuous coughing Recurrent bacterial growth (H. influenzae) When mucus continuously drains down the throat, it irritates the airway and triggers coughing fits. 2. Post-COVID Airway Hyperreactivity After COVID, many patients develop chronic airway inflammation similar to asthma. Symptoms: Severe cough attacks Thick mucus Sensitive airways Fatigue This condition can last months to years. 3. Bronchiectasis (Important to Rule Out) Recurrent infection with Haemophilus influenzae sometimes indicates bronchiectasis (permanent airway dilation). Clues: Chronic cough Daily mucus production Recurrent bacterial infection Fatigue A HRCT chest scan is needed to confirm this. Important Tests You Should Consider Because antibiotics keep failing, doctors usually investigate further: HRCT chest (high-resolution CT) CT scan of sinuses Repeat sputum culture with antibiotic sensitivity Immunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgA, IgM) Pulmonary function test These help identify why the infection keeps returning. Long-Term Management Approaches 1️⃣ Airway Clearance Therapy Very important for sticky mucus. Methods: Steam inhalation Nebulization (saline) Chest physiotherapy Breathing exercises 2️⃣ Sinus Drainage Treatment Daily saline sinus irrigation (Neti) helps remove infected mucus. 3️⃣ Targeted Antibiotics If Haemophilus influenzae keeps returning, doctors sometimes use: Longer antibiotic courses Low-dose long-term antibiotics This decision must be made by a specialist. Ayurvedic Support (Safe with MS if supervised) Ayurveda can help reduce Kapha accumulation and airway inflammation. Herbs commonly used Sitopaladi churna Talisadi churna Yashtimadhu Haridra (Turmeric) Classical medicines Talisadi churna + honey Kantakari avaleha Chyawanprash (small dose) Nasal therapy Anu taila nasya may help sinus drainage. ⚠️ But since you are immunosuppressed, medicines must be chosen carefully. Red Flags (See a pulmonologist urgently if) Fever Blood in sputum Severe breathlessness Weight loss Night sweats ✅ My honest suggestion: You should consult a pulmonologist and ENT together, because your symptoms likely involve both lungs and sinuses.
