is ghee good for cough - #24605

Avery

I am really worried about this persistent cough I've had for weeks now. I feel like I’ve tried everything! I read somewhere that ghee could help, but I’m not sure if that's true. Is ghee good for cough? My friend mentioned using ghee and honey together, but I don't know how that even works or if it’s safe for someone like me. I’ve been feeling really congested and sometimes it's hard to sleep at night because I keep coughing. Tried some over-the-counter stuff, which didn’t really help. I saw on a forum that ghee, being good for lungs or whatever, might soothe it. Is ghee good for cough really? Or am I just jumping on another trend because I’m desperate here? Maybe the way I consume ghee matters? Like, should I just eat it straight or mix it with something? Any advice would really be appreciated because I just want to kick this cough to the curb and breathe easy again!

Indeed, ghee has been considered beneficial in Ayurveda for managing cough, mainly due to its soothing and lubricating properties. It is said to help pacify aggravated vata and pitta doshas, which can often be at the root of persistent coughs characterized by dryness or irritation. However, if you're dealing with a cough that's been ongoing for weeks, it's important first to ensure there is no underlying serious condition, so consulting with a healthcare professional is recommended. Combining ghee with honey is a traditional remedy, often used in Ayurveda. This combination works as an expectorant, helping to clear mucus, and provides a soothing effect. However, it's essential to note that honey should never be heated or mixed with hot ghee, as charaka samhita advises that it can become toxic in such a state. Instead, you can mix room temperature or slightly warm (not hot) ghee with honey in equal parts and consume it a couple of times a day. Do ensure that the honey is raw and organic if possible. To add additional benefits, you might consider mixing a small amount of ginger juice with the ghee and honey. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help with congestion. Another option is to consume a teaspoon of plain, warm ghee as a standalone measure. It should be taken on an empty stomach early in the morning. This might help coat your throat and reduce the irritation that leads to coughing fits. Ensure that you keep yourself sufficiently hydrated. Warm fluids, like water or herbal teas, infused with a bit of ginger or tulsi, can be quite soothing for a persistent cough. It's crucial to understand that while these remedies can offer relief, effectiveness might vary based on individual conditions and any underlying imbalances. If symptoms persist, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any serious concerns.
