is lassi good for digestion - #25107

Lucy

I am really curious about whether is lassi good for digestion. I’ve been having some serious gut issues lately. After meals, I feel super bloated and just icky, and my regular doctor just keeps pushing pills at me, which I don’t want. I read somewhere that lassi can help but I’m not sure. Last week, after a heavy dinner with friends, I was in the bathroom like, a million times. It was awful! My aunt always swore by lassi, saying it helped her tummy troubles, but I tried it once and didn’t feel any different – maybe I made it wrong? Anyway, I thought I’d ask, is lassi good for digestion? Should I drink it daily or just when I’m feeling off? I got some yogurt in the fridge, should I add sugar, salt, or any fruit to it? I really want to get my digestion back on track. Any tips on how to make it really work?

Lassi, in Ayurveda, is certainly known for its digestive benefits. It's a probiotic beverage, traditionally consumed after meals to aid digestion, particularly beneficial for pacifying Pitta dosha. It can also balance Vata and help in promoting healthy Agni, or digestive fire. However, it’s important to know how and when you consume it, for best effects. Given your symptoms of bloating and frequent bathroom visits, it sounds like there may be an imbalance in your digestive process, perhaps excessive Pitta or even weakened Agni. Lassi can indeed be a helpful option here. For making a digestive-friendly version of lassi, you’ll need to blend yogurt with water in a ratio where one part yogurt is to two parts water to ensure it's not too heavy. Traditional lassi doesn't need much in the way of flavorings, but adding a pinch of roasted cumin or freshly grated ginger can enhance its digestive properties. Avoid adding too much sugar as excessive sweets can aggravate digestive disturbances, and salt should be used sparingly as excess can increase bloating. Consume Lassi fresh, ideally after a meal, when your digestive process is still active. Drinking it daily is fine as long as it suits your body and especially beneficial during lunch - which is typically the heaviest meal for most. If you've tried lassi before and found it ineffective, it might be the preparation or timing was off, or perhaps there's another underlying issue that might need attention. For immediate relief from bloating, avoid heavy, fried or too spicy foods and focus on lighter meals that are easier to digest. Including ginger tea or peppermint tea in your routine can further aid digestion. Meanwhile, remember, any persistent or severe digestive issue should be evaluated, as they might need a more targeted approach beyond diet. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it's advisable to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to get a detailed understanding of your doshas and overall prakriti (constitution). They can provide more personalized advice tailored to your body's specific needs.
