is dahi good for health - #25183

Hailey

I am really confused about somthing and could use your help. I've been reading mixed things about whether dahi is good for health or not. Last week, I went to the doctor cause I had this persistent stomach discomfort and the tests showed that my gut flora is kinda all over the place. My mom always said that dahi is good for digestion and adds probiotics, and I’ve been eating it regularly. But like, now I'm not sure — is dahi good for health in cases like mine? I noticed that when I eat dahi, I feel a bit better, like it’s soothing, but then I read online that too much might not be great. I'm also trying to watch my overall diet and I don’t want any conflicts with my treatment. A friend told me to try a few herbal remedies, and I wonder if that would clash with including more dahi. Is dahi good for health, or should I be cutting back? Just looking for some genuine insights from anyone who's dealt with similar issues, please!!!

Dahi, or yogurt, typically can be beneficial for digestion due to its probiotic content, which helps promote a healthy gut flora. In your situation, where you've been experiencing stomach discomfort and disrupted gut balance, dahi might actually assist in soothing your digestive system. Probiotics present in dahi can help restore the natural balance of gut bacteria, potentially easing discomfort. However, moderation is key, as consuming large amounts may cause digestive upset in some individuals. It's not a universal remedy; listen to your body and how it reacts. For your current condition, it’s essential to analyze your dominant dosha (vata, pitta, or kapha) because that determines which foods are more suited for your constitution. As an example, if you lean towards a pitta imbalance (characterized by heat, inflammation, and acidity), too much dahi might not be ideal. Opt instead for cooled or spiced dahi, maybe with a pinch of cumin or ginger powder to aid digestion and neutralize excessive acidity, which soothes pitta. When it comes to combining dahi with herbal remedies, caution is recommended. Some herbs could interact with probiotics or your digestive process, either beneficially or otherwise. For instance, herbs like triphala support digestion and detoxification, which may complement dahi’s benefits. But always consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner before mixing remedies, especially since herbs can vary widely in effects. Additionally, focus on timing. Dahi is best consumed during midday, when your digestive fire is strongest (known as Agni in Ayurveda) - this helps you integrate its benefits better. Avoid dahi late at night as it might promote mucus production, affecting digestion negatively. Overall, if eating dahi makes you feel somewhat better, there's no need to eliminate it entirely; just keep tabs on your portion and timing. Also, aligning any new herbal treatments or dietary changes with your doctor's advice will ensure coherent and effective care for your gut health.
