Balavishnu Taila - #35338

Joshua

I am really starting to worry about my 8-year-old son, he has been dealing with some skin issues for a while now and we haven’t found much relief. His skin gets super dry and scaly, especially on his elbows and knees, and he keeps scratching it. We've tried a bunch of over-the-counter creams but nothing seems to work. A friend recommended Balavishnu Taila, saying it could help with moisturizing his skin and maybe even reduce the itching. I am wondering, has anyone tried Balavishnu Taila for kids? I mean, do you guys think it's safe to use for children at such a young age? We actually started using it a couple days ago after reading about it and he seems to like the application process, but I can’t tell if it’s really helping or if it’s just my wishful thinking. Sometimes, I feel like I am in over my head with all the options out there. Also, like, how often should I be applying Balavishnu Taila? Should be a daily thing or just a few times a week? Honestly, I’m just a bit lost right now and would appreciate any insights you all have! Thanks!!

Doctors' responses

Balavishnu Taila, an Ayurvedic formulation, can indeed help with your son’s dry, scaly skin, especially if it’s due to a Vata imbalance, which is common with such symptoms. Traditionally, Balavishnu Taila is used to moisturize and soothe skin conditions in children, and generally considered safe for kids. It combines various herbs and oils that are known for their nourishing and calming properties. Your friend’s suggestion aligns with common Ayurvedic practices, and the legendary texts like Ashtanga Hridaya mention such preparations for managing dry skin conditions.

However, you should always perform a patch test before full-scale application, as with any new topical treatment, to ensure no adverse reactions occur. Start by applying a small amount on a less affected area, and observe for any irritation or discomfort. If all seems well, you can proceed to use it on a larger area such as elbows and knees.

In terms of application, using Balavishnu Taila once or twice daily could be beneficial. Best times for application are after a bath, when the skin is still slightly damp, to help lock in moisture. Night-time application can also be particularly useful, allowing the taila to work overnight without disturbance. Ensure the affected areas are clean and dry before applying to prevent any infections, as scratching can often lead to minor injuries or reduce skin integrity.

In addition to topical treatments, consider Ayurvedic dietary recommendations to support skin health. Incorporating ghee, almonds, and warm spices like turmeric in his diet could promote an internal balance, however, consult with a practitioner for personalized advice.

Monitor your son’s symptoms and observe any changes over a week or two. If there’s no improvement or symptoms worsen, consult with a professional for further exploration, especially to rule out any underlying conditions that may require different interventions. Stay attentive to changes and responses to the treatment, and adjust accordingly.

Balavishnu Taila is indeed used in Ayurveda to help manage skin issues, especially in children. It can be soothing for dry and scaly skin because it’s traditionally formulated with herbs that moisturize and reduce inflammation. For an 8-year-old, applying it is generally safe as long as there isn’t any known allergy to the ingredients involved. However, it’s always recommended to do a small patch test on the inner arm to ensure there’s no adverse reaction before applying it more widely.

As for frequency, you can start by applying Balavishnu Taila once a day. The best time to apply would be after a bath when the skin is still a bit damp, which will help the oil absorb better. A gentle massage can increase circulation and enhance benefits. But if your son doesn’t enjoy the sensation, just a light application can suffice. As you mentioned starting it a few days ago, it may take a little time to see results, so give it about two weeks before assessing its effectiveness.

If the condition doesn’t improve or if the skin irritation seems to worsen, it would be wise to consult a pediatric dermatologist for a more tailored approach. Sometimes, skin issues can signal an underlying imbalance that might need further investigation, especially if dietary or lifestyle modifications are necessary to help balance the doshas. Keep in mind that managing skin issues often involves a combination of topical treatments, diet, and sometimes even stress management, even in young ones. Remember, Ayurveda looks at the body holistically, so addressing potential triggers in various aspects of life can be beneficial.
