is curd good for fever - #40956

I am really confused about something and hope someone could help! A couple of days ago, I got hit by this fever that just won’t go away. At first, I thought it was just a cold but it turned into full-blown fever with chills and everything. I’ve been drinking lots of fluids, trying to stay hydrated, but my mom keeps insisting that I should eat curd. She says, “Is curd good for fever?” but honestly, I’m not sure if that’s true or not. I tried searching online but got mixed answers. Some say it’s good for digestion but isn’t the body kind of fighting something off when you have a fever? I feel like I might just get sicker. Like, my throat’s been all scratchy and I’m scared that dairy would just make it worse? I haven’t even eaten much, and what I have had has been pretty bland. Just soup and toast, you know? I’m really wondering if introducing curd into my diet would help or if it would just complicate things. Should I give it a go or steer clear until this fever decides to leave? Thanks for any insights!

When dealing with fever, particularly with symptoms like chills and a scratchy throat, introducing curd into your diet might not be the most beneficial choice immediately. According to Ayurvedic principles, fever often indicates an imbalance in the body’s heat and cold energies, known as Pitta dosha disturbance. Ayurveda suggests that during fever, digestive strength, or Agni tends to be diminished.

Curd is considered Guru or heavy to digest and possesses qualities that don’t align well with a weakened digestive fire. It’s also Kapha-increasing due to its cooling and heavy nature, which can potentially aggravate symptoms like congestion or a scratchy throat, especially if you’re already experiencing symptoms related to cold. During an acute illness like fever, the body’s focus is more on fighting the pathogen, and consuming heavier, harder-to-digest foods could stress your digestive system further.

Instead of curd, you might consider introducing lighter, warm foods that support Kapha and Pitta pacification, such as warm vegetable broths or thin soups infused with spices like ginger, cumin, and black pepper as they help boost Agni and are easier on the stomach. Turmeric, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, can also be beneficial. Incorporating warm herbal teas, like tulsi or ginger tea, might provide comfort and aid in soothing a scratchy throat.

Once the fever subsides and your appetite returns to normal, you could gradually introduce fresh, homemade curd in small amounts to benefit from its properties of aiding digestion and providing probiotics. Ensure it’s consumed at room temperature or slightly warm, and avoid consuming it with fruit or at night, as it can become harder to digest under these conditions.

Ultimately, if your fever persists or worsens, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out any serious conditions or need for more immediate treatment.

Curd, or yogurt, does hold a unique place in the diet due to its probiotic properties and potential to aid digestion. However, when dealing with a fever, it’s crucial to consider more than just the digestive benefits.

From a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, fever often relates to an imbalance in the body’s doshas, particularly pitta. Incorporating curd during a fever might not be ideal, as it has the tendency to increase kapha and potentially pitta dosha. These imbalances could potentially exacerbate your symptoms, especially the scratchy throat. Dairy products, especially when consumed cold, can intensify mucus production, which wouldn’t be beneficial in your current state.

Since you already experience chills and a scratchy throat, focusing on foods that are easy to digest, warm, and supportive of your agni (digestive fire) would be more suitable. Soups made from lentils or mung daal, seasoned with cumin and ginger, might be more helpful. These ingredients can help balance vata and pacify pitta, allowing your body to naturally regain equilibrium.

Staying hydrated with warm herbal teas, such as ginger and tulsi, can aid in soothing the throat and maintaining warmth in the body. Allow your body time to restore balance, and when your fever subsides, gradually reintroduce curd into your diet if desired, ensuring it’s consumed at room temperature rather than cold. If fever persists or worsens, seek medical evaluation to rule out any underlying conditions that might need further attention. Taking a cautious approach can prevent complicating your current symptoms.
