how to control hyperthyroidism - #41353

Paisley

I am really struggling to manage my hyperthyroidism and it feels like no matter what I try, nothing works! Just last month, I was so shaky and anxious that I couldn’t even hold my coffee without spilling it everywhere. And my heart starts racing unexpectedly which is super freaky! The doctors put me on some meds, but the side effects are driving me up the wall. Sometimes, I wonder if there’s a better way, like how to control hyperthyroidism through natural means instead of relying on prescriptions that don't seem to do much? My sister suggested I look into Ayurveda for natural remedies, but I have no clue where to start. Like, would herbs or certain foods help? I’ve heard things like ashwagandha could be good for stress relief, and I’m curious if there are any Ayurvedic perspectives on how to control hyperthyroidism with diet or lifestyle changes. What should I be eating or avoiding? It just feels overwhelming and I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with this or maybe some doc that knows the best ways to manage it naturally. Any insight would be a lifesaver!

Managing hyperthyroidism through Ayurvedic principles necessitates understanding your unique constitution and how imbalances in the doshas, particularly pitta and vata, can manifest as symptoms like anxiety and tremors. It’s essential to first address your diet, as what you consume directly influences these doshas. Favor a pitta-pacifying diet, focusing on cool, calming, and grounding foods. Incorporate oats, rice, cooked vegetables like zucchini, sweet potatoes, and juicy fruits like melons and sweet berries. These help soothe agni and calm pitta.

Avoiding stimulants is crucial. Spicy foods, excess salt, and caffeinated drinks, including coffee, can exacerbate your symptoms by aggravating pitta. Similarly, reducing fried or greasy foods will benefit your overall well-being and help balance your energy levels.

Herbs are integral to Ayurveda. Ashwagandha is known for stress relief but for hyperthyroidism, focus on herbs like Brahmi and Shankhpushpi which can help calm the mind and alleviate anxiety. Triphala is excellent for detoxifying the body gently, promoting hormone balance, but remember these should be taken under supervision of a trained practitioner to ensure the right dosages for your condition.

Lifestyle also plays a pivotal role; adopt practices that calm and pacify vata and pitta. Incorporating yoga and meditation into your daily routine can significantly impact your stress levels and mental clarity, thus helping regulate your symptoms. Moon salutations (Chandra Namaskar) in yoga can be especially cooling and calming.

Stay consistent with routine! Establishing regular sleep and meal times is important for balancing your circadian rhythms. Also, consider a regular practice of abhyanga (self-massage with warm sesame oil) to nurture the nervous system and ground vata.

While these Ayurvedic practices can be supportive, it’s pivotal to continue any necessary medical treatments and consult with both your healthcare provider and a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for an integrated approach. Hyperthyroidism can have severe implications if not properly managed, so ensure any natural remedies complement your current treatment plan, without replacing necessary medical interventions.

Managing hyperthyroidism through an Ayurvedic lens involves a holistic consideration of your dosha imbalances and lifestyle. Hyperthyroidism is typically linked to an excessive pitta dosha, leading to increased metabolism, anxiety, and palpitations. Here’s how Siddha-Ayurveda might guide you.

Dietary adjustments can significantly influence your body’s balance. Aim to include cooling and pitta-pacifying foods. Prioritize vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and leafy greens, while minimizing spicy, acidic, and caffeine-rich foods. Focus on a mix of sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes. Avoid sour and salty foods, which may aggravate your symptoms.

Specific herbs can be beneficial. Ashwagandha is generally more suited for vata-related imbalances, but considering its stress-relieving properties, it might have a complementary role. However, Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) could be more directly beneficial as it helps in calming the mind and balancing pitta. Use it in consultation with a trained practitioner to find the appropriate dosage for your needs.

Shankhapushpi is another herb considered beneficial for hyperactivity and anxiety, helping in calming the nervous system. Regular use, along with a balanced diet, might bring about noticeable changes in your stress levels and heart palpitations.

As for lifestyle, incorporate cooling yoga poses and pranayama like Chandra Bhedana and Sheetali, which are effective in pacifying pitta. Avoid over-exertion and try to rest adequately. A regular sleep schedule can help sync your body’s rhythms.

It’s important to ensure ongoing interaction with your healthcare providers, as integrating Ayurveda with your current treatment needs careful monitoring, particularly if you’re taking medications. If symptoms like racing heart persist or intensify, please consult with your doctor to ensure there’s no urgent underlying issue.
