You’re experiencing difficulty gaining weight, despite a good appetite and being a foodie, suggests the need to closely look at your digestive fire (Agni) and your body’s nutrient absorption ability. In Ayurveda, Agni plays a crucial role in determining how nutrients are assimilated into the body. When Agni is weak or irregular, even though you eat well, your body may not be properly absorbing and utilizing the nutrients.

First, integrate herbs like Ashwagandha and Shatavari into your diet. Ashwagandha can be consumed as a powder, mixed with warm milk before bed, supporting tissue build-up and strength. Shatavari aids in improving body strength and balance in hormones adding nourishment. A teaspoon daily is generally sufficient, and consider preparing them as meda-pachaka (lucid) syrups with milk.

Focus also on balancing your Vata dosha, as excess Vata can lead to weight loss and undernourishment. Establish regular eating routines without skipping meals. Opt for warm, cooked foods that are calming and grounding. A breakfast of warm porridge with ghee could be beneficial. Enhancing meals with healthy fats like ghee or sesame oil may also help in nurturing body tissues.

To increase your Agni, sip warm water or herbal teas with ginger throughout the day, aiding digestion. Eating fermented foods such as idli or dosa improve enzyme activity supporting digestion. Avoid cold drinks or raw foods that can dampen Agni.

Practice gentle yoga or restorative exercises which gently support body weight and improve digestion. Balancing sleep patterns ensuring adequate rest also nurtures tissue restoration.

Massage the body with warm sesame oil, especially your abdomen, and joints, promoting circulation and dhatu nourishment.

However, rule out any underlying medical issues like thyroid discrepancies. Consulting with a healthcare professional may provide additional insights ensuring no other systemic causes are at play.

Your situation might be related to an imbalance in your doshas, particularly a heightened vata. Vata imbalance can affect your digestion and assimilation of nutrients, preventing weight gain. First, observing your agni, or digestive fire, is crucial; strengthening it might help in better absorption of nutrients.

You can start by including foods that are rich in kapha qualities—moist, heavy, and grounding. Consider consuming warm, cooked meals rather than raw or cold foods, which can further aggravate vata. Focus on including grains like rice and wheat, lentils, dairy, and nuts into your daily meals. Ghee is particularly beneficial for improving digestion and enhancing nourishment, so try adding a teaspoon to your meals.

Incorporate ayurvedic herbs and formulations that promote weight gain and improve digestion. Ashwagandha is known for its ability to build strength and body mass. You might consider taking ashwagandha powder with warm milk before bedtime. However, it’s prudent to consult with a practitioner familiar with your specific prakriti to personalize dosage.

Keeping regular meal times is essential for regulating agni. Also, avoid distractions while eating and focus on your food. Mindful eating can enhance digestion and contribute to weight gain.

If more serious underlying issues may exist, such as an undiagnosed medical condition affecting weight gain, a comprehensive examination by a qualified healthcare provider is advisable. Defining the root cause ensures correct treatment—never delay in seeking professional care if you notice unexplainable symptoms beyond the scope of ayurvedic recommendations.
