Chronic soft swelling in the underarm accompanied by itching, especially if persistent over 16 years, can be linked to factors like lymphatic congestion, skin conditions, or even mild infection. In Siddha-Ayurvedic terms, this might be an imbalance in Kapha and Pitta doshas, often aggravated by lifestyle or diet.
To address this imbalance, let’s start with dietary adjustments. Reduce intake of heavy, oily, and overly spicy foods. Focus on light, easily digestible meals; include plenty of vegetables and seasonal fruits. Drinking warm water with turmeric and ginger can help balance Kapha and alleviate swelling. Try to include barley and moong dal in your diet, as they are lighter and promote cleansing.
Topically, you can use a paste made from turmeric with a little bit of neem leaves, which have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Apply it to the swollen area twice a day for 15-20 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water. This helps reduce swelling and itching over time.
Regular exercise, especially those enhancing circulation like brisk walking or yoga, is beneficial. It promotes the flow of lymphatic fluids and pacifies Kapha dosha. Avoid synthetic or tight-fitting clothing that may irritate the area further.
Hydration is essential. Drinking adequate water flushes out excess toxins. Meanwhile, monitor if there is any increase in swelling, pain, or change in texture, and if so, it may be necessary to seek medical evaluation to rule out other conditions.
