I am super confused about something I read recently. For the last few weeks, I’ve been enjoying this really refreshing snack combo of curd and mango. I mean, who doesn’t love sweet, juicy mangoes with cool, creamy curd, right? But then I stumbled upon this old saying that says we should never mix them?! This has me worried, honestly. 😟 Like, just last week, I ate a whole bowl of curd with mango slices mixed in, and I felt fine. However, I’ve read that eating curd and mango together can lead to digestive issues or, like, cause skin problems. I don’t wanna risk anything. I’ve noticed sometimes my tummy feels a bit off after having this combo, but I thought it might just be something else I ate, you know? Can we eat curd and mango together, or should I stop mixing them? I really love this snack, but if it’s bad for my health, I guess I’ll have to find other ways to enjoy mangoes. What do you guys think? Any advice from Ayurvedic perspective would be super helpful!

According to Ayurveda, it’s believed that certain food combinations, including curd and mango, may not be compatible due to their energetic properties. Both curd and mango are considered sour, and from an Ayurvedic viewpoint, consuming two sour-tasting foods together can sometimes lead to digestive problems or imbalance in the doshas, mainly Pitta, which is associated with fire and heat in the body.

Ayurveda emphasizes maintaining a balance in digestive fire (Agni), and incompatible long-term food combinations can potentially disturb this balance. While you might feel fine consuming the combination occasionally, repeated intake might lead to discomfort or digestive disturbances. Often, symptoms like upset stomach or bloating may not show immediately and can be subtle or intermittent.

It’s essential to observe how your body reacts to this combination. If you’ve noticed any discomfort following its intake, it would be wise to rethink this pairing. Consider having them separately, allowing some time in between to ensure each is fully digested before introducing the other. If mango is in season and you love its taste, try enjoying it earlier in the day when digestion is typically stronger, and have curd during lunch, as it is a good time to consume heavier foods. Or, you might experiment with having curd in a different form, like buttermilk, separately to see if there’s a difference in how you feel.

From a practical standpoint, if you truly enjoy the taste, consuming them together on rare occasions may not cause immediate harm, but awareness of its effects on your body’s constitution and health is crucial. Listen to your body, as it’s the best judge of what works and what doesn’t for you individually.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, the combination of curd and mango is generally not advised. This is rooted in the principle of food compatibility, which is part of Ayurvedic nutrition. When curd, a dairy product, is combined with fruit like mango, it can lead to imbalance in digestive fire, or agni, and disturb the doshas, especially Kapha and Pitta doshas.
