how to take shilajit with milk - #42334

Lucy

I am really struggling to figure out how to take shilajit with milk. I've been trying to incorporate it into my daily routine for the past month since I heard such great things about its benefits for energy and overall health. The thing is, I never know the right wway to prepare it. I just took some last night with warm milk and felt like I might’ve overdone it—like maybe 1/2 tsp instead of the recommended amount, which wasn’t a good idea. Now I’m not sure if I should have it every day or just a few times a week. I've also read that some folks mix it with honey, but honestly I'm not sure how that would taste. Plus, my stomach feels odd after using it this way, which has me worried. Does anyone have a solid answer for how to take shilajit with milk? Should I heat the milk first or just mix it in cold? And what about timing—should I drink it in the morning or the evening? I keep hearing mixed info. If I take it too late in the day, will it affect my sleep or anything? Any solid pointers would be super helpful! Just trying to get the health benefits without making myself feel worse. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Taking shilajit with milk is indeed a time-honored Ayurvedic practice, and you are on the right track by looking to integrate it properly. Generally, shilajit is taken with lukewarm or warm milk. The warmth enhances its potency, helping it to be absorbed better by the body. To start, dissolve around 300mg to 500mg (approximately a pea-sized amount) of shilajit resin in warm milk. It sounds like you used a bit too much; half a teaspoon was likely excessive. With sensitive constitutions, or if you’re first starting, reducing the amount may be beneficial.

Consider taking it in the morning, as shilajit’s energizing properties can kickstart your day. Timing is crucial – consuming it too late can affect your sleep, as you suspected. If mornings become inconvenient, early afternoon could work, but avoid it within 4-5 hours of bedtime.

As for mixing shilajit with honey, that’s another popular method. Honey has its own therapeutic benefits in Ayurveda, enhancing shilajit’s effects. If it works well for you, add a small spoon to sweeten and mask the bitterness. Because you have noticed some stomach upset, make sure the body’s agni (digestive fire) is strong. Incorporate ginger or cumin in other meals or teas to support digestion.

If taken daily, it’s typically considered safe, but starting with a few times a week allows you to assess how it suits your body’s reaction, without overwhelming your system. If any discomfort persists, it may be best to adjust the dosage or frequency. On days you feel more tired or under stress, feel free to use it a bit more liberally, being mindful of how your body responds.

Remember, choices in Ayurveda are always best customized to your unique prakriti (constitution) and current state of balance, so adjustments are perfectly normal. Always keep in consideration your body’s feedback and adjust accordingly, consulting a professional if in doubt.

Taking shilajit with milk is a great way to incorporate this powerful rejuvenative into your routine. The key is in moderation, understanding your body type (prakriti), and ensuring you’re balancing what’s taken with how your body reacts. Generally speaking, 300-500 mg per day is suitable for most, which is often a pinch (around the size of a rice grain) when dealing with pure shilajit resin or powder—not the 1/2 tsp you’ve mentioned. Overdose can make you feel unwell, as you’ve experienced.

Preparation can indeed play a significant role in its efficacy and comfort. You should prefer warm milk, rather than cold, as warmth aids in a better synergy with shilajit’s natural heating qualities that can benefit digestion (agni). This warmth helps in assimilation and supports vata and kapha balancing, promoting good absorption and more effective results on ojas (vitality).

To further alleviate the uneasiness you feel, take it during or after having your meal either in the morning or early afternoon for energy support. Nighttime consumption might affect your sleep, especially for those with more naturally energetic (pitta or kapha) constitutions.

Adding a small amount of honey can enhance its taste and offer additional benefits, as honey can serve as an anupanam (vehicle) that aids in delivering the herbs deeper into the system, being mindful though that honey should never be heated or cooked.

If discomfort persists or you notice persistent changes in energy, digestion, or sleep patterns, consider consulting directly with an Ayurvedic practitioner to reassess your dosage, preparation, and integration within your lifestyle. Always remember that while shilajit can offer profound benefits, it is potent, and nuanced tuning for individual systems makes all the difference.
