is dahi good for health - #43723
I am really confused about something. I’ve been hearing more about probiotics lately and my friend said that dahi, like yogurt, is super good for health. But, is dahi good for health? I used to love having it every day, but honestly, I’ve been feeling kind of bloated and gassy after eating it these days. Maybe it’s just me? I don't know if its because my diet has changed or what. On certain days I'd even mix in fruits or honey for the taste but I still feel off afterward. My mom told me dahi helps digestion and boosts immunity, and there’s this myth she believes that it can cure everything. 😅 But what if it’s just not working for me? Also, I read somewhere that consuming dahi with certain foods can be bad—like, is it really true? I really wanna keep it in my diet cause I know it's good, or at least me thought so. If it helps anyone, I’m in my early 30s, pretty active but have had some gut issues recently. Should I be not having dahi for a while, or is there a way to make it work better for me? Just worried that I might be missing out on the benefits. Thanks a bunch!

Dahi, or Indian yogurt is typically very good for health as it contains beneficial probiotics that aid digestion and improve gut health according to Ayurvedic texts. However, the symptoms you experiencing suggest there could be an imbalance in your doshas, particularly the Vata dosha, which often manifests as bloating and gas.
Firstly, it’s important to understand your body constitution, or prakriti. Some individuals may have difficulty digesting dahi, especially if they have a predominantly Vata dosha. In such cases, excessive intake or improper combinations can aggravate Vata, leading to bloating and digestive discomfort. It’s possible that the changes in your diet might be impacting your digestive fire, or agni, making it difficult to digest certain foods, including dahi.
When pairing dahi with fruits or honey, it’s important to note that Ayurveda advises against such combinations as they can disturb the digestive process due to the differing natures of these foods. It might be usefull to consume dahi on its own or with a pinch of spices like cumin or black salt that can help balance the Vata and kāpha dosha, enhancing its digestibility.
Incorporating warm turmeric milk or ginger tea may also aid in soothing your digestive system. If you would prefer to keep dahi in your diet, try having it at room temperature rather than cold, and avoid consuming it late at night, which can increase any digestive distress.
If your symptoms persist, taking a short break from dahi might be beneficial. Monitor how your body respond and consider reintroducing it gradually, observing your body’s reaction. Should issues continue or worsen, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized assessment would be recommended to identify any underlying imbalances.
