Doctors' responses

A small, moveable lump under a baby’s skin, particularly at the back of the head, could be a swollen lymph node, which can often happen due to infections or a general immune response. In babies, lymph nodes might swell for a variety of reasons, including teething, a minor infection, or even a recent vaccination. It’s generally considered benign if the lump is small, rubbery, and can be easily moved under the skin.

However, considering your baby had previously fallen off the bed, it’s crucial to rule out any serious complications such as a hematoma—a localized swelling filled with blood, caused often by an injury. Usually, a hematoma would be firm and might feel tender. If this bump hasn’t gone away or if your baby shows any other signs such as unusual behavior, sleeping agitation, vomiting, or decreased activity levels, you should seek medical attention promptly.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, a gentle application of a warm compress may assist in soothing the area if he doesn’t show signs of discomfort. But remember, avoiding any immediate physical interventions is wise unless advised by a healthcare provider. In balancing vata dosha, which often gets aggravated by falls or sudden impacts, consider ensuring your baby has a consistent routine and warmth, as abrupt changes can unsettle them.

Considering things can worsen conceivably, it’s prudent to have a doctor check your baby, just to rule out anything that requires immediate intervention, especially since infants’ health concerns can escalate quickly. Keep observing any changes in his behavior or the lump’s characteristics and consult your pediatrician for further guidance.
