To help your son regain his appetite after recovering from viral fever, it’s important to focus on rekindling his digestive fire, or ‘agni’, which can become weakened after illness. Start by offering him warm, easy-to-digest foods that soothe the stomach. Rice porridge (khichdi) is a great starting point – it’s gentle on digestion and can be fortified with cumin and ginger, enhancing agni. You can slowly introduce vegetables like carrots and spinach, maintaining a good balance of nutrients.
In Ayurveda, herbs such as trikatu (a mix of black pepper, long pepper, and ginger) can support digestive function. You can make a mild herbal tea using a small pinch of trikatu, steeped in warm water, and offer it twice daily. However, ensure the amount is very minimal for a young child, as the spices can be potent. Avoid cold and uncooked foods which may aggravate the digestive system.
Since your son is in a cold climate and prone to catching cold easily, strengthening his immunity becomes essential. Chyawanprash, an Ayurvedic herbal jam, is nourishing and can help build immunity. Provide a small teaspoon daily, preferably in the morning, ensuring he’s comfortable with the taste and texture.
Encourage him to have warm water throughout the day; it keeps his throat clear and aids digestion. Tulsi (holy basil) and licorice tea can also soothe any scratchiness in the throat and provide warmth.
Finally, ensure he gets plenty of rest to recover his strength. Gentle yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises) can be introduced as he gains strength, they’re great for improving lung function and overall vitality.
If his appetite doesn’t improve, or he shows any further symptoms of illness, consult a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying issues. Always ensure remedies are given in safe, age-appropriate doses, considering the child’s specific health context.
For your son’s post-fever recovery, there are some practical Siddha-Ayurvedic steps to help improve his appetite and strengthen his body. His digestive fire, or agni, likely weakened during the illness, so focusing on boosting it is key. First, consider giving him a decoction of ginger tea. Prepare it by boiling a few slices of fresh ginger in water for 10 minutes, and let him sip it warm once or twice a day. Ginger can help stimulate digestion and balance agni, which can be crucial in a cold climate like Canada’s.
In terms of diet, focus on light, warm, and easily digestible foods like rice gruel with a bit of ghee, or soup with vegetables like carrots and beetroots. These foods are nourishing and support his body’s recovery without overwhelming his digestion. Including a pinch of hing (asafoetida) in his meals can also aid in digestion.
You may consider giving him amla (Indian gooseberry) juice, diluted with warm water, once daily. Amla is rich in vitamin C, helping to build immunity and regulate digestion. Also, ensure he’s staying hydrated with warm water, which can help cleanse the nadis.
For his susceptibility to cold and cough, providing him with a simple herbal steam inhalation using basil leaves can be supportive in soothing his respiratory tract.
Always pay attention to his symptoms – if he has difficulty recovering or presents any serious signs, seeking medical advice is important. Adjusting his routine to keep him warm and ensuring he doesn’t overexert himself will further support his recovery.
