Hello I fully understand your problem. A 3-week-old baby with colic is a very typical case, especially in formula-fed babies, and in the majority of situations, it is functional and temporary, thus, not causing any harm. You were right to think twice about using hing water — it is definitely not suitable for such a young infant.
WHY THIS IS HAPPENING (IN SIMPLE TERMS) In a 3-week-old baby: -The digestive system is still immature -Gas gets trapped easily → tight abdomen, crying, pulling legs -Formula feeding can increase gas compared to breast milk This normally goes up to around 3–6 weeks and gets better by 3–4 months.
❌ HING WATER Please discontinue hing water at once.
Reasons: Hing is too potent and heating Can irritate the baby’s gut Allowance of dehydration and gut spasm
✅ Here are some commonly used and considered safe when given in correct dose:
👉Colimex Drops (Simethicone) Dosage: 0.5 ml, up to 2–3 times a day Use: After feeding Benefit: Gas bubbles are broken Relieves tight stomach Very safe, non-absorbable
👉Woodward’s Gripe Water (Alcohol-free only) Dose: 2.5 ml once or twice daily Prefer giving after feeds Only alcohol-free, sugar-free version should be used
Ayurvedic Option (Gentle & Baby-Safe)
👉Bonnisan Drops Dose: 2–3 drops, 2 times daily Can be mixed with a little boiled & cooled water Helps: Gas Abdominal tightness Improves digestion gently
FEEDING-RELATED MEASURES (VERY IMPORTANT) As your baby is on exclusive formula feeding, do not forget to: – Ensure correct formula dilution (not concentrated) – Proper burping after every feed – Hold baby upright for 15–20 minutes post-feed – Use an anti-colic bottle if possible – Avoid overfeeding
HOME COMFORT MEASURES (SAFE)
Gentle tummy massage (clockwise, very light) Warm hands on baby’s abdomen (no hot water bottle) Bicycling baby’s legs slowly Swaddling during crying episodes
WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY
If you notice any of these, please see a doctor immediately: Vomiting Poor weight gain Blood in stools Continuous crying >3 hours daily Fever
REASSURANCE
Colic: ❌ Is NOT dangerous ❌ Is NOT due to pain or disease ✅ Adjusts itself naturally with time
Warm regards, Dr Snehal Vidhate
Firstly Very important non-medicine measures you can opt- ✔ Proper burping after every feed (at least 10–15 minutes) ✔ Keep baby upright for 20 minutes after feeding ✔ Gentle clockwise tummy massage (2–3 minutes) ✔ Bicycle leg movements ✔ Ensure good latch during breastfeeding (air swallowing worsens colic)
Other wise application of hing water.
Take Aravindasava 2.5ml or bonnisan 2.5ml bd
To improve colic in 3 weeks baby can gv colic aid ( but after consultation with paediatrician ) or gripe water just 2 drops Other than that do not gv anything until unless the paediatrician advise
Himaliya bonnsil drop Massage with coconut or seseam oil
STOP giving Hing water orally. It is too hot and sharp for a 3-week-old; it can cause acidity and worsen the pain. Hing is only for external use at this age.
Remedies •Bonnisan Liquid: Give 5 to 8 drops, 3 times a day. (Safe herbal blend for newborn colic). •Mix a pinch of Hing with warm water. Apply the paste around the navel (not inside). This draws out gas and softens the tight stomach within minutes.
Feeding Advice • Since she is formula-fed, she swallows air. You must burp her for 15 minutes after every feed, even if she sleeps. • Bottle Check : Ensure you are using a Slow Flow nipple. If the milk comes too fast, she gulps air, causing colic.

Simply mix hing (asofoteda) in warm water and APPLY it on her tummy region.
Avoid internal medicines till 2 months.
Massage her tummy very lightly.
See to it that the mother is eating healthy food and nothing that is having preservatives.
When dealing with colic in infants, Ayurvedic approaches can be gentle and soothing. However, it’s crucial to balance safety with effectiveness, especially with a 3-week-old baby. Hing (asafoetida) water that your wife has given can be beneficial for colic, due to its carminative properties, but must be used very cautiously. Instead of giving it internally, you can mix a tiny pinch of hing in warm water and apply it externally around the baby’s navel area. This can help relieve gas and abdominal discomfort without risk of ingestion.
Additionally, consider using a light baby massage with warm sesame oil. This can help soothe the infant and support digestion. Warm the oil slightly, ensuring it’s not too hot, and gently massage the baby’s abdomen in a clockwise direction. This direction supports the natural movement of the intestines and can help with colic pain.
Always ensure that breastfeeding continues on demand, as breast milk itself helps with the management of colic. Keep the baby upright during and after feedings to reduce air swallowing, which contributes to gas and discomfort.
For the Ayurveda-inspired approach, you might explore using a proprietary ayurvedic formulation approved by pediatricians, like gripe water or similar, specifically designed for infants. However, it’s critical to consult a pediatrician before giving any product internally, to confirm its safety for your baby.
Lastly, maintain a calm environment, as overstimulation can worsen colic symptoms. Reducing noise and light, playing soft lullabies, or gentle rocking can provide comfort to the baby.
If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to seek immediate medical intervention to rule out any serious conditions. Remember the safety of the baby, always comes first.
Boil ajwain 1/2tsp. In a 300ml. Water. Boil till 200ml. Allow to cool and give this water 1/2 tsp twice. Apply cologne water arround umbilical area. Not on umbilical. Start with Bonnisan drops 1drop 3 times . Just give breast milk only., after every fee allow it to be in upright position on your arms.
HELLO.
WHY COLIC OCCURS IN NEW BORNS In Ayurveda, newborns have Mandagni-> very weak digestion Vata dominance-> gas, pain, tight abdomen Formula milk is heavy and cold-> aggravated vata
So symptoms appear as -tight/boated stomach -crying after feeds -drawing legs towards abdomen -relief after passing gas or stool
STRICTLY AVOID -raw hing water -ajwain/jeera/saunf water -honey toxic below 1 year -home decoctions -castor oil, ghee, herbal powders
Hing is ushna + Tikshna-> can burn infant gut lining
INTERNAL MEDICATIONS
OPTION 1= BONNISAN DROPS Dose= 5 drops twice daily after feeds give with a spoon or dropper (do not mix in bottle_
WHY IT WORKS -mild deepana-pachana -pacifies vata + kapha -reduces gas without irritation
OPTION 2 = AYURVEDIC COLIC DROPS (alcohol-free) -Examples= Colicacid, colimex ayurvedic- any one -5 drops 2-3 times after feeds -use only one medicine, not multiple
EXTERNAL THERAPY- VER IMPORTANT PART
A) OIL MASSAGE- BALA TAILA -warm oil slightly (lukewarm, not hot) -place baby on soft surface -massage abdomen clockwise (direction of colon) -gentle circular movements -Duration = 5-7 minutes
FREQUENCY= once daily preferable before bath =pacifies vata, improves bowel movement, releives abdominal tightness
B) GENTLE FOMENTATION -take a soft cotton cloth -warm it mildly -place on baby’s abdomen for 2-3 minutes -can be done during colic episodes Cloth should be warm, not hot
FEEDING CORRECTIONS (very important) since baby is formula-fed, digestion depends heavily on technique
Correct feeding rules -Follow exact dilution (do not thicken) -avoid overfeeding -burp baby after every feed -keep baby upright 15-20 min post feed
Ayurvedic tip Formula is heavy so give -smallerquantity -more frequent feeds
STOOL ANG GAS MONITORING Normal in colic -passing gas -soft stools -crying relieved after stool
Abnormal (need attention) -hard stools -green froth stools -blood or mucus -no stool > 48 hours
DAILY AYURVEDIC ROUTINE MORNING -oil massage -warm bath
AFTER FEEDS -upright holding -gentle back rubbing
EVENING -calm environment -avoid overstimulation -low light, quiet room
DURATION -drops = 2-3 weeks -massage= daily till 3 months -colic usually resolves by 12-16 weeks
WHEN TO STOP MEDICINE -baby becomes comfortable -crying reduces -abdomen soft -passing gas easily Then gradually stop drops but continue massage
-Colic is not a disease -It does not harm growth -Ayurveda focuses on gentle correction, not suppression
