I have some hyperpigmented spots on my back. I used melacare cream to reduce them but those spots became lighter and somewhat reddish type and a bit spread like very less. There is no irritation or burning or anything of the sort. I have stopped using the cream. What should I do to regain my original colour and remove the rest of the spots?

How long have you had these hyperpigmented spots?:

- More than 6 months

How many spots do you currently have?:

- A few scattered spots

Have you noticed any changes in the spots since stopping the cream?:

- They remain the same

What is your skin type?:

- Combination

How is your overall skin health?:

- Clear and healthy

Do you have a history of using other skin treatments or products?:

- No, this is the only product used

How is your sun exposure during the day?:

- Regular sun exposure without protection

Melacare contains steroid, so skin becoming light + reddish is common after stopping. Now focus on calming and restoring skin. Manjistha churna – 1/2 tsp twice daily after food with warm water Arogyavardhini vati – 1 tablet twice daily after food External application Apply aloe vera gel (fresh) on back – once daily Mix turmeric + sandalwood powder with rose water, apply thin layer 3 times/week, wash after 15 min Diet Avoid spicy, oily, junk food Drink more water Include neem leaves (2–3 tender leaves daily) or neem capsule

Hello, It sounds like you may be experiencing a mild case of “steroid-induced erythema” or skin thinning, which is common when creams containing hydroquinone and steroids (like Melacare) are used. The redness and spreading suggest the skin barrier is irritated, even without active burning. In Ayurveda, this is a Vicharchika or Kshudra Kushtha presentation involving Pitta-Rakta vitiation. The harsh chemicals have likely increased the “Tejas” (heat) in the localized area, leading to Raktima (redness). To regain your original color, the focus must shift from “bleaching” to Pitta Shamana (cooling) and Rakta Prasadana (blood purification). Medicine : 1. Internal Treatment Mahathikthakam Kwath: This is the gold standard for skin inflammation and pigmentation. It cools the blood and heals the skin from within. Dose: 15 ml mixed with 60 ml of lukewarm water, twice daily, 30 minutes before food. 2. External Application Kumkumadi Oil: Since the area is now reddish and sensitive, this oil will help in “Varnya” (restoring natural complexion) without irritation. Dose: Apply 3–5 drops over the affected area at night. Massage gently and leave it on. Nalpamaradi Keram: If the spots are large, this turmeric-infused coconut oil is better for the body. It treats both the redness and the underlying pigmentation. Dose: Apply over the back 30 minutes before bathing, then wash off with a mild cleanser. Important Advice The skin on your back is currently photosensitive due to the previous cream. Keep it covered or use a physical sunblock if exposed. Do not scrub the reddish spots with a loofah or harsh soaps, as this will trigger more pigment production (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Drink plenty of water to help the Mahathikthakam Kwath flush out metabolic waste.

What you’re seeing is likely a steroid-related skin reaction from Melacare (it contains a strong steroid). Lightening + reddish spreading means skin has become sensitive and thinned, not truly healed. Good step that you stopped it 👍 What to do now: First priority = skin recovery, not further treatment Do NOT restart Melacare or any steroid cream Keep the area simple and gentle At home: Apply plain coconut oil or aloe vera gel twice daily to soothe and repair skin. Sun protection is very important: Even on back, try to avoid direct sun or use clothing cover, otherwise pigmentation will worsen again. Avoid: Harsh soaps, scrubbing, or trying new strong creams for now. After 2–3 weeks (once redness settles), you can start mild correction: Kumkumadi tailam – apply at night (thin layer) Manjistha-based products (internal) can help gradually Gandhak rasayan – 1 tablet twice daily These help in restoring skin tone slowly. Important: Color may take 4–6 weeks to normalize, don’t rush with strong products. If redness increases or spreads more, consult a dermatologist. Regards, Dr Raghuveer (Ayurvedacharya)
