hello Krish Ramanani ,

I understand how frustrating and uncomfortable scalp psoriasis can be, especially when it has been affecting you for such a long time and gradually spreading to new areas. Psoriasis is a condition where your skin cells grow faster than normal, leading to thick, scaly patches that itch and sometimes cause discomfort. In Ayurveda, this is seen as a disturbance of the Pitta and Kapha doshas causing skin inflammation and dryness. Though psoriasis can be challenging, with consistent and tailored Ayurvedic care, it is possible to manage symptoms effectively and reduce flare-ups, improving your quality of life. The key is to balance your internal system first, calm the aggravated doshas, and support skin healing with natural herbs and lifestyle adjustments.

I would like to understand more about your current lifestyle, diet, any triggers you have noticed, and your daily skin care routine. Also, are you experiencing itching, scaling, or any other symptoms beyond the scalp? This will help me suggest the best approach for you.

Meanwhile, I recommend starting with gentle detoxification and calming of Pitta and Kapha doshas through internal medicines and external therapies suited to your skin type.

Prescription:

Start with Amapachana (digestive support) to reduce internal toxins using medicines like Triphala churna 3 grams twice daily with warm water before meals. Internal medicines such as Mahamanjishthadi kwatha 40 ml twice daily after meals to reduce inflammation and purify the blood. Neem capsules 500 mg twice daily as it helps control skin infections and inflammation. For external application, use Neem and turmeric paste or an Ayurvedic medicated oil like Khadiradi taila gently applied to the scalp daily before washing. Keep your scalp clean but avoid harsh shampoos; use mild herbal shampoos like those with Shikakai and Amla. Avoid spicy, oily, and processed foods that may aggravate Pitta; focus on fresh, cooling, and nourishing foods. Practice stress-relief methods like gentle yoga and meditation as stress can worsen psoriasis. Investigations: Basic blood tests to rule out any other inflammation or infection. Skin biopsy or dermatologist’s follow-up if needed for detailed assessment. With patience and regular Ayurvedic care, you will see gradual improvement in symptoms and fewer new patches over time. This approach supports healing from within, helping you regain comfort and confidence. Please feel free to share more details or questions. I am here to help you on this journey to better health.

Warm regards, Dr. Karthika

Scalp psoriasis often results from an imbalance in the body’s doshas, primarily due to an aggravation of Pitta and Vata doshas. In Ayurveda, achieving a lasting solution involves a comprehensive approach focusing on diet, lifestyle, and specific therapies to restore balance.

Firstly, cleansing the body of accumulated impurities (ama) through Panchakarma treatments, like Virechana (purgation therapy), can be beneficial. This helps in eliminating toxins that exacerbate psoriasis. Consult with a qualified Ayurvedic physician to undergo such detoxification safely and effectively.

Dietary adjustments are crucial. Avoid foods that elevate Pitta such as spicy, fried, and acidic items, and incorporate cooling and Pitta-balancing foods like cucumber, watermelon, and leafy greens. Include more healthy fats like ghee and coconut oil, known to pacify Vata. Ensure your meals are well-timed, harmonious, and fit to your constitution.

Hydration and managing stress play an essential role. Practicing Sitali Pranayama (a cooling breathing exercise) can help manage stress and reduce Pitta. Try incorporating meditation and yoga to maintain a balanced mental state, important in managing chronic conditions like psoriasis.

Using herbal formulations and oils can aid in healing. Apply medicated oils like Mahamarichyadi Taila or Aragwadhadi Taila to the affected scalp areas - these oils have properties that soothe and alleviate psoriasis symptoms. Herbs such as Neem, Turmeric, and Amla can be consumed in powdered form or as decoctions, as they purify the blood and help in detoxification.

Ensure consistent follow-up with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can monitor your progress and adapt treatments as necessary. Remember, persistence in following Ayurvedic regimens and lifestyle modifications is key in addressing chronic conditions like scalp psoriasis. Consider your overall health, habits, and environment to achieve a better balance and lasting relief.

Scalp psoriasis can be managed more effectively through Siddha-Ayurvedic approaches, though a permanent “cure” may vary as each individual’s prakriti (constitution) and doshic imbalance differs. This condition often arises from imbalances in Vata and Pitta doshas, often exacerbated by stress or certain lifestyle factors. The aim is to cleanse the blood, balance the doshas, and strengthen the tissues.

You might consider incorporating Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Turmeric (Curcuma longa), both known for their blood-purifying and anti-inflammatory properties. You can take them in capsule form or as a decoction regularly. Additionally, incorporating aloe vera gel directly applied to the scalp can sooth irritation and moisturize the skin.

Include Triphala in your diet—it acts as a gentle detoxifier, helping regulate digestion and manage the body’s metabolic fire, or agni. To do this, take a teaspoon of Triphala powder with warm water before bedtime.

A daily Abhyanga (self-massage) using medicated oils like Dhanvantaram thailam can support healthier skin and balance doshas. Focus on gentle circular motions on the scalp. Regular practice of prayanama can also reduce stress, indirectly reducing flare-ups.

Avoid foods that increase Pitta, like spicy, oily, and sour foods. Instead, favor cooling, naturally sweet foods like fresh fruits and vegetables.

Remember, the severity and response to treatment can vary significantly. Consult a qualified Siddha-Ayurvedic practitioner who can customize treatments further according to your specific needs. If your symptoms worsen or don’t improve, seeking professional medical advice is crucial.
