how to use shikakai - #38906

Claire

I am really struggling with my hair, which has been so dry and brittle lately, ugh! I read somewhere that shikakai is supposed to be a miracle for hair, and now I'm here wondering how to use shikakai correctly. I tried looking it up, but I keep seeing mixed advice, like some say to use it as a powder, others mention making a rinse. I mean, do I just mix it with water and slap it on my scalp? Last week, I mixed some in with my shampoo, but I didn’t notice much difference. I even thought about making a paste, but I'm not totally sure that's it. Should I let it sit for a long time or rinse it out quickly? Honestly, my hair's been falling out a bit too, which is making me nervous. 😬 I’m just looking for a solid method to incorporate it without messing it up more. How do you guys use shikakai in your routine? Is it really as good as they say? Should I be doing something else to prep my hair, or maybe I’m not using good enough quality shikakai? Just trying to figure out how to get my hair back to being healthy again. Thanks for any tips!

When it comes to shikakai, it’s definitely a valuable herb for hair care, but using it effectively is key. Shikakai, known as “fruit for hair,” is an ayurvedic herb rich in saponins, which gently cleanse hair while maintaining its natural oils, a crucial aspect for reducing dryness and brittleness. Here’s how you can incorporate shikakai properly into your hair care routine:

To start, purchasing a high-quality shikakai powder or pods is essential. If you’re using powder, approximate one to two tablespoons should be adequate for medium-length hair. For those choosing pods, soak them overnight in warm water; this softens them for the next step.

When you’re ready, blend soaked pods or shikakai powder with enough water to form a smooth, runny paste. Apply it directly to damp hair and scalp gently, making sure to avoid vigorous scrubbing, which can irritate. Let the mixture sit about 10 to 15 minutes; that allows the cleansing action to occur effectively without over-drying.

Afterward, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. It’s vital not to leave any residue, which may cause scalp dryness or particles to remain. As an optional step, you can follow with a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse to help restore your scalp’s pH balance, which further enhances hair lustre.

Consider using shikakai not more than twice a week initially, seeing how your hair reacts, as overuse could contribute to dryness. Complement its use with a nourishing hair oil treatment, such as coconut or sesame oil, which you can leave on for an hour before washing.

If hair fall continues, check your diet for any deficiencies—adequate protein and iron are vital—or possibly seek further consultation to explore underlying health imbalances. Also, ensure you’re using quality raw ingredients absorbing properly with regular oil massages, to really nourish the scalp and roots.

Shikakai can indeed be a wonderful traditional remedy for dry and brittle hair, providing a gentle cleansing effect without stripping your scalp of its natural oils. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, shikakai is prized for its ability to maintain balance in the scalp’s environment by soothing the pitta dosha and nourishing the scalp tissues. Here’s how you might approach using shikakai for best results.

To begin with, it is most commonly used in powder form. A simple method is to make a paste by mixing the shikakai powder with warm water. Aim for a yogurt-like consistency. Once ready, apply this to your scalp and hair, ensuring even coverage. Let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. There’s no need to apply shampoo afterward; shikakai naturally cleans your hair.

If you’re experiencing hair loss or significant discomfort, shikakai can be combined with other Ayurvedic herbs like amla or reetha for additional benefits. These can enhance hair strength and reduce shedding. Use a 1:1 ratio with these powders when making your paste. Be mindful, though; if your scalp feels dry, try adding a teaspoon of coconut oil to the mixture for added moisture.

Quality matters, so ensure you’re sourcing a good quality, organic shikakai to avoid impurities that may harm your scalp. As for frequency, using shikakai once or twice a week is generally recommended.

Given that your hair has been falling out as well, it could also be beneficial to assess your diet and lifestyle since hair quality often reflects internal health. Enhance your diet with foods rich in iron and vitamins, and manage stress through practices like yoga or meditation, subtly supporting your hair health from the inside. If hair fall persists, consult a healthcare professional to ensure no underlying health issues are causing the symptoms.
