Hello I‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ am very much able to relate to your worry of PMS symptom manifestation especially mood swings that have been bothering you for the last 1–3 years. It can indeed affect your daily life, emotional balance, and overall wellbeing. The thing is — with the appropriate Ayurvedic help, it can be controlled quite well.

YOUR CONCERN AND PROBABLE CAUSES

Your symptoms: - PMS during 1–3 years - Mood swings - Some improvement with supplements

Probable Ayurvedic Causes: PMS symptoms such as irritability, being emotionally sensitive, and sudden mood changes are mainly caused by hormone fluctuations that come with age (perimenopause phase), stress, irregular digestion, low ojas, and vata–pitta imbalance.

INTERNAL MEDICATION

1. Shatavari Churna – 1 tsp with warm milk at night - Helps hormonal balance - Reduces emotional irritability - Also, do not take it with buttermilk as it lessens its strength in PMS.

2. Ashwagandha Tablet – 1-0-1 after food - Helps to calm the mind - Relieves anxiety & emotional fluctuations - Improves sleep and energy

3. Manasmitra Vati – 1 at bedtime - Very beneficial for mood stability - Helps in lessening PMS irritability & mental restlessness

4. Kumariasava – 15 ml after lunch - Regulates hormonal axis - Helps in easing PMS and perimenopausal symptoms

EXTERNAL CARE

Warm Abhyanga with Ksheerabala Taila - Put on feet, lower abdomen & back - Gives relief from Vata, helps to calm the mind, lifts the mood

HOME REMEDIES

1. Raisins that have been soaked in water + 5 almonds every morning 2. Warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg at night 3. Drink of Jeera + Dhaniya + Fennel throughout the day 4. 1 tsp flaxseed daily for natural phytoestrogens 5. Turmeric milk – 3–4 times a week

DIET PLAN

✅ INCLUDE - Ghee (½–1 tsp daily) - Green leafy vegetables - Moringa, beetroot - Moong dal, masoor dal - Grains that have not been milled - Fruits in season - Meals that are warm and fresh

❌ AVOID

- Over consumption of tea/coffee - Eating of cold food & drinking of cold drinks - Consuming packed/junk foods - Sugar, bakery items - Not eating when hungry - Eating at night

LIFESTYLE TIPS

- Sleep 7–8 hours - Evening walk for 20–30 min - Less screen time at night - Soft yoga & pranayama - Do not get into too much stress - Eat regularly - Stop worrying too much

INVESTIGATIONS NEEDED

- Thyroid Profile (TSH, T3, T4) - CBC - Vitamin D - Vitamin B12 - FSH, LH (if cycles are irregular)

With the right Ayurvedic treatment, mood swings caused by PMS will be very much better in 4–6 weeks. You are already going in the right direction — just require the right combinations and the proper form of Shatavari.

Warm regards Dr Snehal ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Vidhate

Hello mam !

Yes, you can take Shatavari for PMS, but not with buttermilk. Shatavari is cooling and nourishing, while buttermilk is heating and increases acidity. When they are taken together, it can disturb digestion and reduce the benefit you’re trying to get for PMS.

Since your PMS symptoms are mainly mood swings, tension, and emotional sensitivity, the best combination is something that calms hormones gently without upsetting digestion.

You’re already taking Ashwagandha, which is good but Shatavari should be taken in a way that your body absorbs well and helps with PMS balance.

How to Take Shatavari Correctly 🌿 • Shatavari – 1 teaspoon or 1 capsule • Mix with: warm water or warm milk • Timing: at night (best for PMS + emotional balance)

Do not take it with buttermilk.

Your Current Supplements 👍

Ashwagandha + Shatavari is a classic combination for PMS, emotional stability, sleep, irritability, and hormone balance.

You can continue Ashwagandha safely.

If PMS Mood Swings Are More Severe 😣

You may add: • Brahmi tablet – 1 tablet at night with warm water

This combination is safe and works smoothly for emotional PMS.

Investigations :🧪

If PMS worsens suddenly: • Thyroid profile • Vitamin D • Vitamin B12

These deficiencies often worsen PMS mood swings.

Warm regards,

Dr. Karthika

Shatavari with buttermilk is NOT ideal Shatavari is cooling & heavy. Buttermilk is also cooling + slightly sour and together they can increase Kapha & mood swings in some women.

Better way: Shatavari Kalpa OR plain Shatavari powder = 5–8 gm with warm milk (not buttermilk), only at night Ashwagandha – keep it, but timing matters Take Ashwagandha Lehyam OR capsule only morning (5–10 gm)

Follow this - 1 Shatavari – 5–8 gm night with warm milk 2 Ashwagandha – 5–10 gm morning with warm water/milk 3 Kumaryasava – 15 ml + 30 ml water after lunch & dinner (from Day 12 to Day 28)

Evening 5 PM – 1 small til-gud laddoo OR 1 tsp white sesame + mishri → instant serotonin boost

Stop buttermilk with Shatavari from today and switch to warm milk at night. Continue Ashwagandha morning. Add Kumaryasava from next cycle Day 12.

Taking Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) and Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) for managing symptoms of PMS can be beneficial, however it’s crucial to ensure the dosage and combinations are appropriate for your unique constitution (prakriti). Shatavari is known for its ability to support the reproductive system, nourish ojas and balance pitta, which can be helpful if you experience irritability or hot flashes. Consuming it with buttermilk is a common practice, as buttermilk helps in digestion and pacifies aggravated pitta. However, ensure the buttermilk is fresh and made from probiotic plain yogurt, not the commercial variety.

Ashwagandha, a powerful adaptogen, helps in calming the mind and relieving stress, which can play a role in alleviating PMS symptoms. Make sure you are not over-consuming, typically 1 to 2 grams per day should be enough unless prescribed otherwise by an Ayurvedic practitioner.

Regarding other supplements, it’s critical to be cautious and ensure they are not conteracting each other or causing imbalances. In Ayurveda, addressing lifestyle and diet is equally crucial. Consider engaging in regular physical activity like yoga, pranayama, and meditation to maintain hormonal balance and reduce stress.

A diet minimizing caffeine and processed sugars can also help as these can exacerbate PMS symptoms. Opt for warm, freshly cooked meals, rich in vegetables and whole grains. Remember, balance is key in Ayurveda, and self-medication without professional guidance can sometimes lead to imbalances. Meeting with an Ayurvedic physician can individualize your treatment plan, ensuring it aligns well with your body’s specific needs.

Combining Shatavari with buttermilk is an often recommended approach in Ayurvedic practices, as Shatavari is known for its cooling properties and buttermilk aids in digestion and providing probiotics. Shatavari can potentially help balance hormonal fluctuations and support the reproductive system, so it may provide relief for some symptoms associated with PMS. However, be aware that dairy can cause mucus buildup in some individuals, particularly those with a Kapha imbalance, so observe any bodily responses and adjust accordingly.

Now, regarding Ashwagandha, it’s typically used to manage stress and improve vitality. If stress and fatigue are part of your PMS symptoms, Ashwagandha might be beneficial. It’s strongly advised to take Ashwagandha in the form of a churnam (powder) or capsules with warm water or milk, preferably in the morning and before bed, to help with overall stress levels and sleep patterns.

Since you mentioned “other supplements,” make sure there aren’t overlaps or contraindications with your current routine. For example, excess of ingredients that stimulate the body may worsen heat and irritation, so take note of any such reactions. Additionally, consuming a diet rich in fibers, with plenty of fresh vegetables, during your cycle can be beneficial. Avoid processed foods with additives, and maintain regular physical activity to help manage the symptoms.

Always consult with a practitioner knowledgeable in Ayurveda to confirm any personal imbalances and to ensure that your regimen is effectively tailored to your current constitution and lifestyle. The supervision ensures the treatment’s harmonization with your unique body constitution, potentially enhancing its overall efficacy.
