Jaundice happens when there’s too much bilirubin - a yellow pigment - in your blood. Yeah, it’s most noticeable because your skin and the whites of your eyes turn yellow, which can be alarming. So, how does bilirubin pile up? It’s because your liver isn’t processing it right. The liver, bile ducts or, sometimes, an increased breakdown of red blood cells could be the culprits here, as you mentioned.
Doctors first look into your history. They may order blood tests, imaging studies, and sometimes a liver biopsy. In adults, causes can be diverse — liver diseases like hepatitis, alcoholism, gallstones blocking the bile duct, you name it. In newborns, jaundice is super common. Often because their little livers aren’t mature enough to handle bilirubin efficiently. But don’t worry, most newborn jaundice clears up on its own in a few weeks.
Jaundice doesn’t always signal serious liver issues. Mild cases may even resolve without any foul play in the liver. But if it’s severe or persists, it’s crucial to get it checked out. Rapid investigation is important to rule out serious conditions.
In Ayurveda, liver health is linked to pitta balance. Remedies like Bhumyamalaki, Kutki, and Aloe Vera juice are thought to support liver detoxification and improve bile flow. Bhumyamalaki is known for its cooling and cleansing properties, while Kutki is said to enhance liver function. But remember, don’t self-prescribe; consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor treatments as per your Prakriti (body constitution) and Dosha imbalance is vital.
Diet plays a huge role too. Think light and easy-to-digest meals — like moong dal soup. Increase your intake of vegetables like bitter gourd and dandelion greens. Hydrating with warm water and herbal teas could also support liver health. Avoid deep-fried, spicy, or oily foods that may exacerbate the condition.
Ayurvedic or herbal treatments can take time, and be sure to monitor your symptoms closely. Sometimes modern medicine might be the quick fix one needs. Remember that while Ayurveda supports the body holistically, severe or sudden jaundice calls for immediate medical attention to avoid complications!
