Allergic Rhinitis ( Pollen Season) - #20510

Pragya Gupta

From last 2 years I am experiencing triggered sneezing, nose drip, coughing at night, in mid March which continues for 2-3 months. I consulted ENT and he gave me nasal spray and medication and no such cure. Is there any cure in ayurveda? Also I have IBS (loose stools- semi solid, gas, farting), so can ayurveda help?

The symptoms you’re describing during the March to May period do seem indicative of Allergic Rhinitis, likely triggered by pollen. Ayurveda can indeed offer guidance, emphasizing a holistic approach to balance the body and alleviate symptoms.

For the respiratory issues, it’s is essential to manage Kapha dosha, which governs mucus and constructs in the body. Begin by preparing a decoction of Tulsi (Basil), Black Pepper, and Ginger. Boil these herbs in water, and let it reduce to half its quantity. Drinking warm sips of this two times a day can help clear your nasal passages and reduce sneezing. You might also consider using Anu Taila, an ayurvedic nasal drop, placing two drops in each nostril daily in the morning after brushing your teeth. It works by decongesting and reducing pollen sensitivity.

Concerning your IBS symptoms, balancing Vata dosha is crucial as it’s often aggravated in such conditions. Start by brewing a little Cumin, Coriander, and Fennel in hot water and sip on this tea after meals. It supports digestive fire (Agni) without being harsh on the gut. Enhance your diet with warm, soft, cooked foods like rice and steamed vegetables such as carrots and zucchini. Avoid raw salads, cold drinks, and excessively spicy or fried foods.

For both conditions, ensuring a regular routine (Dinacharya) can support stability. Wake up early, ideally before sunrise, with time for meditation or gentle yoga to calm the nervous system and improve gut function.

Avoid dairy during the allergy season, as it can increase Kapha and exacerbate mucus production. To strengthen immunity, consider Chyawanprash—a spoonful in warm milk or alone can be quite beneficial on an empty stomach or before meals.

If your symptoms aren’t improving or ever worsen, do reach back to a healthcare provider as sinusitis or other serious conditions might develop requiring integrated management. While Ayurveda can assist with reducing symptoms, consulting an allergist for more comprehensive allergic testing might also provide useful insights.
