For using nasya oil to relieve sinus issues, it’s important to follow a proper method to ensure safety and effectiveness. Nasya, as per Ayurveda, is about administering medicinal oil through the nasal passages to support respiratory health and clear blockages. The technique involves some preparation, correct posture, and proper dosage.
Before applying nasya oil, you should prepare by creating a calm environment. Ideally, this is done after a warm shower or creating a steam inhalation—which helps open up the nasal passages. Make sure the oil is slightly warmed; test it on your wrist to ensure it’s not too hot.
Lie down on your back with your head tilted slightly backwards, possibly using a small pillow to support your neck. This position helps the oil reach deeper sinus areas. For dosage, typically 2-3 drops of oil in each nostril is sufficient. Use a dropper for precision. After applying, rest in this position for a few minutes and avoid sneezing or blowing your nose immediately after, as this might clear the oil before it has a chance to work.
Directly after applying, gently massage the area around the nose, forehead and sinuses. Your approach of rubbing on the forehead is beneficial—helps allow the nasya oil’s properties to penetrate effectively through the skin.
Do nasya in the early morning or late afternoon, avoiding it during mealtimes or at bedtime. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying condition that might necessitate immediate attention.
