keloid scar - #17024

Anonymously

About a year ago, I got a deep cut on my shoulder, and even though it healed, it turned into a thick, raised keloid scar. At first, I thought it would fade over time, but instead, it got bigger and feels tight sometimes. It doesn’t really hurt, but it’s itchy and uncomfortable, especially when I wear certain clothes. I went to a dermatologist, and they suggested steroid injections or laser treatment, but I’m hesitant. I’ve heard that steroid injections can have side effects, and laser treatments don’t always work. Also, I don’t want to spend a lot of money on something that might not give permanent results. That’s why I’m looking into Ayurveda. Are there natural treatments that can actually reduce a keloid scar over time? I’ve read that certain oils like coconut oil and castor oil help soften scars, but do they work for keloids? Also, are there any Ayurvedic pastes or internal remedies that can help shrink the scar from within? I really don’t want my keloid to keep growing, and I’d love to find a way to reduce it naturally. If anyone has successfully treated a keloid scar with Ayurveda, please let me know what worked for you!

Your concern about the keloid scar is completely understandable. In Ayurveda, keloids are linked to an imbalance of Pitta and Kapha doshas, which leads to excess fibrous tissue growth. The body, in an attempt to heal, overproduces collagen, causing the scar to become thick and raised. Unlike modern treatments that focus only on external reduction, Ayurveda works both externally and internally to soften, shrink, and lighten keloid scars naturally. With patience and consistent care, you can support your skin’s natural healing process. For external treatment, herbal pastes and oils play a crucial role in breaking down excess scar tissue. Applying a Manjistha and turmeric paste (mixed with honey) for 30 minutes daily helps reduce inflammation and excess collagen buildup. Kumkumadi Tailam, an Ayurvedic oil infused with saffron, turmeric, and sandalwood, is excellent for improving skin regeneration—massage a few drops on the keloid each night. Additionally, massaging the scar with warm castor oil or coconut oil can soften the thickened tissue and reduce tightness over time. Internal healing is equally important. Drinking Triphala powder with warm water at night supports detoxification, while Aloe vera juice (15ml daily) helps tissue repair. Herbs like Manjistha and Neem (taken as capsules or herbal teas) purify the blood and prevent excessive collagen formation. A simple home remedy like turmeric milk before bed can also aid in reducing inflammation and promoting skin healing. Diet-wise, avoid excessive spicy, fried, and salty foods, as they aggravate Pitta and may slow down the healing process. Instead, nourish your skin with foods like flaxseeds, almonds, and ghee for deep hydration. Healing a keloid naturally requires time—typically 3-6 months of consistent Ayurvedic care—but the results are lasting and holistic. Supporting circulation with gentle Ayurvedic massages (Abhyanga) using warm sesame oil can further enhance scar healing.

Thank you for sharing your concern. I’ll add to my colleague’s answer. Additionally, lifestyle changes can make a big difference in keloid healing. Stress management through practices like meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises), and gentle yoga can help regulate Pitta imbalances, which are often associated with inflammatory skin conditions. Daily self-massage (abhyanga) with brahmi or ashwagandha oil can further improve circulation and promote tissue repair. For best results, sun protection is crucial — direct sun exposure can darken and harden keloid scars. Applying aloe vera gel with a few drops of sandalwood oil before going outdoors can help protect and soothe the skin. If the keloid is itchy or irritated, applying a cold compress with rose water or diluted apple cider vinegar can provide immediate relief. Additionally, drinking plenty of warm water with a few drops of lemon juice throughout the day helps flush out toxins that may contribute to excessive scarring. Patience and consistency are key in Ayurvedic treatments. While progress may take months, a holistic approach provides long-term improvements by addressing both the symptom and its root cause. If you need a more customized herbal treatment regimen, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner can help refine the treatment based on your unique constitution. Stay committed, and you will gradually see positive changes!

In Ayurveda, keloid scars are often seen as an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, which governs the body’s heat and inflammation. The thick, raised nature of the scar indicates excess Pitta and the body's tendency to overproduce tissue during the healing process. Ayurveda focuses on balancing this excess heat and supporting the skin's natural healing abilities. Topical treatments like castor oil and coconut oil can indeed be beneficial, as they have soothing and moisturizing properties that help soften and reduce the appearance of scars. Castor oil, in particular, is known for its ability to penetrate deep into the skin and promote tissue regeneration, which can help shrink the scar over time. You can apply these oils gently to the keloid area daily. Additionally, Ayurvedic herbs like Aloe Vera and turmeric can help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Aloe Vera gel can be applied directly to the scar, while turmeric, either internally (as a powder in milk or water) or in a paste form, can help balance Pitta and reduce scarring. Internally, herbs like Guduchi and Triphala can help cleanse the body of toxins and support tissue regeneration. Consistency is key in using these remedies, as it may take time for noticeable results. It's important to also avoid further irritation or friction to the area, as this can worsen the scar. While Ayurvedic treatments may take longer to show results, they focus on natural healing and can be a gentle alternative to more invasive procedures.
