fat embolism - #17300

Anonymously

A few weeks ago, my uncle had a really bad accident and broke his thigh bone. He was rushed into surgery, and at first, everything seemed fine. But after a couple of days, he suddenly had trouble breathing, became disoriented, and looked extremely weak. The doctors got really serious and moved him to the ICU. They later told us he had a fat embolism, where fat from the bone marrow entered his bloodstream and traveled to his lungs, blocking oxygen flow. It was terrifying because we had never heard of this before, and they said it could be life-threatening. Luckily, he recovered after a few days, but the doctors told us there’s not much they can do to "treat" a fat embolism directly. They said the body clears it on its own over time, but there’s always a risk, especially after a fracture or surgery. They didn’t suggest any real prevention methods other than monitoring him closely. That’s what got me wondering—does Ayurveda have ways to prevent a fat embolism from happening in the first place? I read that Ayurveda focuses a lot on circulation and blood purification. Are there specific herbs that can help keep the blood healthy and prevent blockages like a fat embolism? Would something like Ashwagandha or Triphala be useful for post-surgery healing? Also, are there dietary recommendations to improve blood flow and keep the arteries clear? My uncle is still weak from the surgery, and I want to help him recover in the best way possible. What are the best Ayurvedic remedies for preventing complications like a fat embolism after surgery? Are there therapies that help strengthen the body and reduce post-surgical risks?

In Ayurveda, the focus would be on improving circulation, supporting digestion, and strengthening the body's natural healing processes post-surgery. Herbs like Ashwagandha and Triphala are excellent for promoting overall vitality and supporting the body's detoxification and healing mechanisms. Ashwagandha helps improve strength and endurance, while Triphala acts as a natural blood purifier and can support bowel health, which is essential for detoxification. To promote healthy circulation and prevent blockages, herbs like Guggulu, Arjuna, and Turmeric can be helpful as they support cardiovascular health and reduce inflammation. Additionally, a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids (like from flax seeds or walnuts), and fiber-rich vegetables can improve blood flow and reduce the risk of complications like a fat embolism. Ayurvedic therapies such as Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (steam therapy) can help improve circulation and reduce stagnation, helping the body recover and heal more effectively. These practices, combined with proper rest and a nutrient-rich diet, can reduce post-surgical risks and promote quicker, more comprehensive recovery.
