Doctors’ responses

Starting solids can indeed influence your baby's digestion, as their system is still adapting to new textures and types of food. Constipation is common during this transition, but there's few things you can do to help gently relieve it. First, assess his diet. When introducing solids, it's important to balance fibrous fruits and vegetables with cereals. Offer your baby well-mashed, cooked fruits like pears or apples or stewed prunes, as these can naturally aid digestion. Additionally, make sure he’s staying hydrated; sometimes, the transition to solids may inadvertently reduce milk consumption, which provides fluid essential for proper bowel movements. Next consider his liquid intake. Breastmilk is still a primary source of hydration. If you’re breastfeeding, continue doing so, as it not only provides fluids but may help ease constipation. You could also give him small sips of cooled, boiled water between his meals. Be cautious with water quantity, as breastmilk or formula should remain the main fluid source till the age of one. Also, incorporate some gentle abdominal massages. Use your fingers to make slow, circular motions on his belly, applying gentle pressure, a few times a day. This can stimulate digestion and provide discomfort relief. Place your baby on his back and move his legs in a cycling motion, as this is often comforting and encourages intestinal movements. Ensure he is active, as much as a 6.5-month-old can be. Even simple tummy time can promote digestion and bowel health, encouraging things to keep moving. If these measures don’t provide relief or if your baby's discomfort intensifies, consult your pediatrician. While Ayurveda offers home remedies, professional assessment is wise where young children’s health is involved, and they may suggest further steps like modifying diet or evaluating possible intolerances. Observing your baby's response to food changes can offer insights into what works best, adjusting accordingly.
