Back spasms can be really uncomfortable, especially with your teaching commitments and osteoarthritis. Understanding your individual constitution (prakriti) and the imbalances (vikriti) is key to finding a suitable Ayurvedic approach for improving your health and managing your symptoms.
Your symptoms might indicate vata dosha imbalance, which can lead to pain and spasms. Let's consider how to address this. Firstly, maintaining warmth is crucial. Try not to expose your back to cold drafts, and use warm compresses on the area when spasms occur to relax the muscles.
Diet is also essential in balancing your vata. Prioritize warm, cooked foods and avoid raw, cold items as they can aggravate vata. Incorporate vata-pacifying foods like millets, sweet potatoes, cooked leafy veggies, and stews. Use spices like ginger, cumin, and turmeric which can help reduce inflammation. Ashwagandha and Shatavari are known to support joint health; you could consider taking them under guidance of your healthcare professional.
Given your routine of standing, ergonomic changes might be beneficial. If possible, try using a chair intermittently, or adjust your stance to reduce strain. Incorporating gentle yoga poses tailored to support your back, like the cat-cow stretch or the gentle cobra pose, can help in flexibility and strength. However, avoid over-straining by doing these under the supervision of a qualified yoga instructor if possible.
Regular massages with warm oils like Mahanarayan oil focused on your back, done gently, are quite beneficial for both the spasms and osteoarthritis. They promote circulation, adding to muscle relaxation. Consider practising Pranayama daily, as it can enhance your lung capacity and overall energy.
Given your medications, any new supplement or herb should be discussed with your doctor, especially since you take BP and thyroid medication. It's important to maintain regular check-ups to monitor how these changes are impacting your health, especially since your condition involves chronic aspects.
