Hello Krishnan, what are your readings of liver function test? And please mention the details of findings of your USG scan. How is your appetite and do you have any abdominal pain?
For managing liver cirrhosis in Ayurveda, the primary focus is on protecting the liver, improving liver function, and stopping further progression by pacifying aggravated Pitta and supporting liver detoxification. Have you experienced any digestive issues like bloating or loss of appetite, or symptoms like jaundice? It’s essential to be cautious and align Ayurvedic treatments alongside any ongoing allopathic care.
To support liver health, I recommend Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), a powerful liver tonic that helps regenerate liver cells and cleanse toxins. You can also take Kumari Asava (an Aloe vera-based formulation) and Punarnava for reducing inflammation and ascites (fluid retention), which are common in cirrhosis. Arogyavardhini Vati is another classical Ayurvedic medicine that can help balance Pitta and improve liver function. However, these should be taken under an Ayurvedic practitioner’s guidance, as dosages depend on the severity of your condition.
Regarding diet, focus on easily digestible, light, and Pitta-pacifying foods such as cooked vegetables, whole grains, and moong dal (lentils). Avoid spicy, oily, fried, or processed foods, as they can aggravate Pitta and burden the liver. Include cooling herbs like coriander, fennel, and turmeric in your diet, which have anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. Drink plenty of warm water with lemon to support detoxification.
As for exercise, engage in mild physical activity like walking or gentle yoga to improve circulation without overexerting your body. Practices like Pranayama (deep breathing exercises) can also help reduce stress, which plays a role in liver health. Avoid strenuous activities that may cause fatigue or strain your liver. Are you currently experiencing any swelling or discomfort in the abdominal area? How is your energy level throughout the day?
Liver cirrhosis is no joke, yeah, it’s something that needs a mix of immediate care and some longer-term strategies. But let’s talk Ayurveda. In this context, we’re looking at restoring balance – particularly with your Pitta dosha, since that often plays a role when liver’s affected.
First, diet. You really want to ease the work your liver’s doing. Freshly prepared foods, light meals – nothing too spicy or oily. Include stuff like bitter herbs and veggies. So think of incorporating gourd vegetables like bottle gourd and bitter gourd. Cooked leafy greens are your friend too. But also, avoid alcohol like it’s the plague – that one’s non-negotiable.
About the spices, less is more. Turmeric is totally okay, even recommended, it has properties that can help manage Pitta. And don’t forget to drink plenty of warm water – maybe sip it through the day to keep things flowing smoothly.
Handling stress is key, too. Simple breathing exercises can calm your doshas and promote liver health. Start with Anulom Vilom or even just some deep belly breathing, do it twice daily. After meals, take a gentle walk. That kinda light movement supports Agni, or your digestive fire, without stressing the body.
For exercise – nothing intense, that’s vital. Consider yoga – stretches and light movements like twists and bends can be beneficial. Uttanasana and Paschimottanasana enhance circulation to the abdomen. 20 minutes a day can make a difference, more isn’t better here.
Don’t skip regular checkups with your doc though. That’s a must. Some things like milk thistle are praised in herbal circles for liver support, but always run by your physician since you’re dealing with a serious condition.
In Ayurveda, the idea’s to enhance quality of life, and secure whatever’s left unsaid – don’t wait on things that affect your health. Keep reaching out if you need more advice!
