can we eat beetroot and curd together - #25198

Lucas

I am really confused about some foods I eat together lately. I've started incorporating more beets into my diet for their health benefits, ya know, and I love that earthy taste. But then I read somewhere that combining beetroot and curd can cause digestion problems?? Like, do people really have issues eating beetroot and curd together? I’m still figuring out how to balance my meals and, honestly, I’ve been having them together for lunch every day, adding curd for a creamy texture, and it’s delish! But now I’m worried if it’s good or bad for me. I’ve had some mild tummy upset, nothing too major but odd, and now I’m second-guessing this combo. Can we eat beetroot and curd together or should I avoid it? What about the nutritional benefits? I’ve read conflicting things, feeling a bit lost here. Any insights would really help!

Doctors’ responses

Eating beetroot and curd together is not typically recommended in Ayurveda due to their differing effects on the digestive system, which might be causing your mild tummy upset. According to ayurvedic principles, curd is considered to be heavy and can aggravate Kapha dosha, especially if consumed in excess or improperly combined with other foods. It is also considered to have a heating property when digested. On the other hand, beetroot is sweet and earthy, but considered a cooling food that can have a laxative effect due to its high fiber content. When these two are combined, their opposing qualities may lead to indigestion or even Ama (toxins) due to improper digestion. In your case, the mild discomfort might be an indication of such digestive disturbance. Even though each element is nutritious on its own, their incompatible nature could be counterproductive when eaten in combination, leading to digestive imbalances. A more harmonious combo would be to have beetroot with other compatible cooling foods, like cucumber or leafy greens, with a drizzle of lime or favoring it with a light vinaigrette. You can enjoy curd separately as a side to other meals such as rice or with warming spices to help balance its heaviness, always in moderation. Remember—it's not just about what foods hold as individual nutritional values, but also how they interact with your body and with each other! Continue experimenting with meal combinations that fit your dosha, and stay attentive to how your body reacts to them. If your digestive discomfort persists, it might be helpful to consult with an Ayurvedic physician to assess your diet comprehensively.
