can i take triphala during periods - #25641

Andrew

I am wondering if I can take triphala during periods? I've recently started using triphala for digestion issues, and it's worked wonders. But I got my period unexpectedly last night, and now I'm feeling all mixed up about whether I should keep taking it. Like, I've read some stuff online saying it's great for detoxing and helps with bloating, which I totally experience during my cycle. But then I also saw this other opinion that said it might make things worse or interfere with the flow? I'm feeling crampy and, you know, a little emotional, so I'm not sure what to believe. Can I take triphala during periods or would that be a bad idea? I've been taking it in powder form and adding it into warm water every morning, which has been pretty okay. Just really don’t want to mess anything up. Any clarity on this would be super helpful! Thank you!

You can generally continue taking triphala during your periods. It is actually known in Ayurveda to support digestion and may even help alleviate bloating and constipation that some women experience during menstruation. Triphala, which is a blend of three fruits—amla, haritaki, and bibhitaki—works gently to detoxify the body and aid digestion without being overly harsh or aggravating for most people. That being said, it's important to remember that every individual's body is different, and how you respond to certain treatments might vary based on your doshic constitution or any specific imbalances you might have. If you find that triphala is exacerbating any symptoms, like increasing cramps, or if you feel any discomfort, you might consider reducing the dosage or pausing its consumption until your cycle is over. To minimize any potential discomfort, make sure you take triphala in warm water, as you've been doing. This aids in its effectiveness and ensures it's easier on your system. Taking it in the evening, about an hour before bed, can sometimes be beneficial, as it helps with overnight digestion. Pay attention to your body's cues. If you're crampy, you might also consider using warming spices in your diet, like ginger or cinnamon, which are known to ease menstrual cramps and balance Vata dosha. Make sure to keep well hydrated and maintain a calming routine with adequate rest. If any symptoms worsen or if you're at all concerned, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure it's the right choice for you. Ayurveda is very much about personalization, and sometimes what works generally may need some tweaking for your individual experience.
