In Ayurveda, dark circles, known as ‘balhatya’, often indicate an imbalance in the doshas, particularly Pitta and Vata. To address this persistent condition effectively, consider a holistic approach that encompasses diet, lifestyle modifications, and local treatments.

Diet plays a crucial role. Reduce intake of Pitta-aggravating foods like spicy, oily and fermented foods that can enhance pigmentation. Opt instead for cooling foods. Aloe vera juice, which calms Pitta, can be taken daily in the morning. Cucumber, which is naturally cooling, can also be included more in your diet.

Adequate hydration is key. Drink plenty of water, as it helps flush toxins and keeps skin hydrated. Herbal teas, like chamomile or mint, can also be beneficial for calming and cooling the system.

Sleep is another pillar in managing dark circles – ensure a consistent sleep schedule, aiming for 7-8 hours of quality rest each night. Consider practices like yoga and meditation to reduce stress, which is known to exacerbate Vata and affect the area around eyes.

For a topical approach, try using a paste made from turmeric and milk. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and lightening properties, while milk soothes the area. Gently apply this under the eyes, leave it on for about 15 minutes, and then rinse off with warm water.

Another beneficial application is almond oil. Before bed, lightly massage a drop of almond oil under your eyes, which supports the skin’s natural healing process due to its vitamin E content.

Incorporate the use of ‘Triphala’, a revered Ayurvedic remedy, which can be taken internally (half teaspoon with warm water at night) to cleanse the system. Before making any significant dietary changes or beginning a new supplement, consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to ensure it aligns with your unique constitution and health status.

Avoid overuse of screens and excessive sun exposure, as these can make both Pitta and Vata worse, and hence the dark circles more prominent. Consider wearing sunglasses outdoors to protect the delicate skin from UV rays.

Lastly, if the dark circles persist despite these changes, it would be prudent to investigate other underlying issues, such as allergies or nutritional deficiencies. Regular follow-ups with an Ayurvedic practitioner will help in tailoring recommendations specific to your ongoing condition and progress.

Dark circles can be a persistent concern and in Ayurveda, we often relate them to imbalances in the doshas—usually a combination of aggravated Pitta and Vata doshas contributing to poor blood circulation and thinning skin. Addressing this condition requires a holistic approach focusing on both internal and external treatments.

Firstly, consider your diet and make sure it includes foods that pacify Pitta and Vata doshas. Include more cooling foods like cucumbers and melons in your diet, and make sure to consume them in moderation. Stay hydrated and avoid excessive caffeine and sugary drinks. Drinking warm water with a few drops of lemon first thing in the morning might also help in detoxifying your system.

Applying a paste of sandalwood powder mixed with rose water around the eyes before sleeping might soothe the skin due its natural cooling properties. Gently massaging your eye area with almond oil can also support, as almond oil is known to reduce dark circles and provide moisturization.

For internal benefits, Triphala, an Ayurvedic formulation, could help in detoxifying the body and improving eye health. Consuming 2–3 grams of Triphala churna with warm water daily may assist in balancing doshas and improving your overall vitality.

Sleep is crucial. Ensure you get at least 7-9 hours of quality sleep. Lack of sleep isn’t just about quantity, but quality as well. Try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

Remember, managing stress is key. Pranayama and meditation can be very effective in making mind calm and helping reduce dark circles indirectly.

However, as your concern has been ongoing for a decade, it’s also wise to get a professional consultation to rule out underlying issues like nutritional deficiencies or other conditions. A balanced approached both ayurvedic and medical could provide a solution.
