Managing an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) in Ayurveda involves rebalancing your doshas, particularly focusing on the kapha dosha, which tends to be predominant in this condition. Your symptoms indicate an imbalance in your body that can be addressed holistically. Here’s how you might approach your situation:

First, assessing your diet is crucial. Focus on foods that stimulate your digestive fire or agni. Incorporate warming and stimulating spices like ginger, black pepper, and cinnamon to enhance metabolism and reduce kapha accumulation. Avoid cold, heavy or oily foods that may increase kapha.

Including Ayurvedic herbs that support thyroid function can be beneficial. Ashwagandha and Guggul are two notable herbs. Ashwagandha supports thyroid hormone production and helps with stress relief, which could address fatigue and depression. Guggul helps in balancing cholesterol and promotes a healthy metabolism. Check with a healthcare provider before adding these, especially alongside Levothyroxine.

Introduce lifestyle changes to balance the doshas. Regular gentle exercise like yoga or brisk walking can boost metabolism and reduce weight gain. Prioritize a consistent sleep schedule and relaxation techniques such as meditation or breathing exercises to alleviate symptoms like anxiety, insomnia, and brain fog.

Implement changes gradually. Coconut oil can be used topically or in cooking to help with skin and hair dryness due to its nourishing properties. Ensure that you regularly hydrate to maintain skin moisture.

Note that changes in Levothyroxine need professional oversight. Consult an endocrinologist before making any adjustment to medications. Though Ayurveda can mitigate symptoms and support overall well-being, it’s important to harmonize traditional and contemporary treatments under medical supervision.

Based on the symptoms you describe, it seems you may be experiencing an imbalance of the Kapha dosha, which often results in sluggishness, accumulation, and symptoms similar to those you’ve mentioned. While Levothyroxine is essential for managing hypothyroidism, it’s important to balance it with Ayurvedic practices to address the root imbalances in your body.

Firstly, dietary adjustments can be especially beneficial. Consider reducing kapha-aggravating foods like dairy, wheat, and processed sugars. Instead, favor light, warm, and spicy foods to ignite your digestive fire (agni). Ginger, turmeric, and black pepper can be excellent in cooking to reduce kapha accumulation.

Incorporate herbs traditionally used in the Siddha-Ayurvedic system like Ashwagandha and Triphala, which help manage stress and support digestion. Ashwagandha can be consumed in capsule form or as a powder mixed with warm water before bedtime to aid in reducing anxiety and supporting thyroid function. Triphala can assist with detoxifying and ensure regular bowel movements, which is vital for reducing weight and inflammation.

Addressing your hair shedding specifically, Bhringraj oil is considered beneficial. You can regularly massage your scalp with this oil to nourish follicles and reduce hair fall. Also, ensure hydration is adequate, and you are consuming omega-3-rich foods like flaxseeds, as they support hair health.

Lastly, mindful daily routines can help. Regular physical activity like brisk walking or yoga, especially in the morning, can stimulate your metabolism. Pranayama and meditation to calm your mind will address fatigue, anxiety, and help with insomnia.

Always discuss any new regimen with your healthcare provider to ensure it doesn’t interfere with existing treatments. If your symptoms worsen or remain unresolved, evaluate with your physician if there might be a need to adjust your current medication dosage. Managing thyroid conditions effectively requires both medical treatment and lifestyle harmony.
