HELLO
Your symptoms suggest chronic constipation, which can lead or to be associated with
1) DIETRY ISSUES -low fibre intake - insufficient water consumption
2) LIFESTYLE FACTORS -sedentry habits - ignoring the urge to pass stool - stress and anxiety
Ayurvedic views constipation as a vata imbalance, particularly apana vata, which governs elimination. Hard stools and dryness point to excessive dryness in the colon.
Likely involved - vata prakopa(aggravation of vata) - dry, cold, rough qualities dominating
TREATMENT GOALS 1) soften and regulate stools 2) Balance vata dosha 3) improves digestive strength 4) prevent recurrence
START INTERNALLY WITH -these target vata imbalance, dry stools and poor bowel movement
MILD DAILY LAXATIVES
1) TRIPHALA CHURNA= 1 tsp with warm water at bedtime =softens stool, promotes complete evacuation, rejuvinates colon
2) HARITAKI CHURNA= 3gm at bedtime with warm water =vata pacifying, gentle laxative, relieves gas and bloating
3) ABHAYARISHTA= 30 ml with equal water twice daily after meals =best for chronic constipation
4) AVIPATIKAR CHURNA(if acidity)= 5gm with water before meals = reduces pitta, helps bowel movement
STRONGER LAXATIVES( IF SEVERE CONSTIPATION)
1) GANDHARVAHASTADI KASHAYA= 15ml with warm water twice daily before meals =clears vata from the colon, use for dry constipation
2) ERANDA TAILA= 5-10 ml with warm milk at bedtime once weekly =strong purgatives, lubricates colon
DIET TO BE FOLLOWED PROPERLY
GRAINS= rice white or red, oats, quinoa, broken wheat, soften roti with ghee =easily digestible, soothing to intestines, grounding for vata
PULSES/LEGUMES= split moong dal, massor dal, urad dal(in small quantity), green gram sprouts(lightly steamed) =moong is best- reduces gas and nourish tissue. cook with cumin , hing, ginger, to avoid gas
VEGETABLES= bottle gourd, ash gourd, pumpkin, ridge gourd, carrot, beetroot, sweet potato, cooked spinach, zucchini =soft, moist, vegetables reduces dryness. cooked and spiced lightly they help digestion

SPICES= cumin, coriander, fennel , ginger, ajwain, hing, black pepper, cinnamon =these spices help digest food, reduce gas and keep agni balanced
SWEETNERS= jaggery, small amount of raw honey (never heat honey), dates, raisins =natural and moistening- helps ease constipation. Not refined sugar
FLUIDS= warm water, jeera water, ajwain. water, ginger tea, fennel-coriander- cumin tea =sip throughout the day to flush toxins, reduce bloating and keep gut warm
GOLDEN RULE= eat warm, moist, well cooked, lightly spiced food, avoid dry, cold, and raw foods- they disturbs your gut further
FOODS TO AVOID STRICTLY

hello sam ,
I understand how frustrating chronic constipation can be, especially when home remedies or medicines havenât helped. Even though you are taking Triphala and yogurt, sometimes the digestive fire (Agni) and bowel motility need gentle but targeted support. With the right approach, we can gradually normalize your bowel movements without harsh medicines.
Before starting: Iâd like to know about your bowel frequency, stool consistency, appetite, sleep, and stress, as these affect digestion.
Ama Pachana (Digestive cleansing): Triphala Churna 3 g at night with warm water for 3â5 days
Internal Medicines: Isabgol (Psyllium husk) 1 tsp with warm water at night Haritaki Churna 2 g in morning with warm water for 20 days
Warm water first thing in the morning, light walk, gentle yoga like Pawanmuktasana
Diet & Lifestyle: Eat cooked vegetables, seasonal fruits, whole grains Avoid cold, oily, processed foods Drink plenty of warm water throughout the day
Investigations (if needed): Colonoscopy only if constipation persists with alarm signs (blood in stool, severe pain)
Doâs & Donâts:
Donât skip medicines or morning warm water Avoid excessive laxatives Track bowel movements daily Avoid high-fat, low-fiber diet Maintain gentle daily physical activity
After 2 weeks to monitor improvement and adjust medicines if needed.
With consistent care, your bowel movements will normalize gradually. Patience and regular habits are key.
Warm regards, Dr. Karthika
Hello Sam,
Thank you for sharing your concern so openly. Your case of chronic constipation (not responding to English medicine) despite taking Triphala daily with large quantity of curd indicates severe Vata imbalance, low Agni (digestive fire), and Kapha aggravation due to excess dahi at night. The approach will focus on restoring Agni, regulating Apana vata (bowel movement), softening stools, and breaking constipation cycle without straining.
đ Why constipation persists - Triphala alone is not enough if Agni is weak. - Curd (dahi) at night is heavy, increases Kapha, and blocks channels â worsens constipation. - Long-term laxative use weakens colon peristalsis.
đ Internal Ayurvedic Remedies First 2 weeks (reset bowel movements): 1. Gandharvahastadi Kashayam â 15 ml + warm water before dinner (natural Vata anulomana, safe). 2. Isabgol husk (psyllium) â 1 tsp with warm water at night (bulks & softens stool). 3. Castor oil (Eranda taila) â 1 tsp with warm milk once or twice weekly at night (mild virechana, cleanses bowels). After 2 weeks (maintenance): 1. Triphala churna â 1 tsp (not 2 spoons) at bedtime with warm water, 3â4 times/week only. 2. Haritaki churna â 1 tsp with warm water on alternate nights (Vata anulomana, prevents dryness).
đĽ Diet & Food Tips â Avoid: - Curd/dahi at night (major cause of blockage). - Dry foods (biscuits, chips, fried items). - Excess tea/coffee, alcohol. â Include: - Morning: Warm water with 1 tsp ghee OR 4 soaked raisins + 2 figs. - Meals: Add ghee on rice/chapati (lubricates intestines). - Fruits: Papaya, banana, soaked prunes/raisins. - Vegetables: Bottle gourd, ridge gourd, spinach, pumpkin. - Bedtime: Warm milk + 1 tsp ghee (excellent for soft stools).
đż Lifestyle & Yoga 1. Drink 2â3 L lukewarm water daily. 2. Walk 10â15 min after meals. 3. Practice Vajrasana after dinner, Pawanmuktasana & Malasana (squat pose) in morning. 4. Fix a routine for bowel movement (early morning after warm water). đ Follow up
Within 7â10 days, stool should become softer & more regular.
Once digestion stabilizes, reduce Triphala to alternate nights, avoid curd at night completely.
If constipation persists even after above care â colonoscopy / thyroid profile may be needed.
⨠With gentle Ayurvedic bowel regulation, ghee-based remedies, and avoiding curd at night, your constipation can heal naturally without dependency.
With kind regards, Dr. Sumi
Hello I can understand your concern about your chronic constipation Chronic constipation not only causes difficulty in passing stools but also leads to bloating, heaviness, headache, piles, and lack of freshness. But dont worry we are here to help you. Outđ
Since you are already taking Triphala, it is a good start, but it needs to be taken in the correct way along with diet and lifestyle support for lasting relief.
â AYURVEDIC REMEDIES FOR CONSTIPATION
âĄď¸1. Triphala Proper Use â
Instead of taking a large quantity (2 spoons), which may sometimes cause bloating, take 1 teaspoon Triphala powder soaked overnight in warm water and drink it early morning empty stomach. Alternatively, 2 Triphala tablets/capsules at bedtime with warm water also work well.
âĄď¸2. Herbal Medicines
1 Isabgol husk (Psyllium husk): 1â2 tsp in warm water or milk at bedtime for soft bowel movement.
2 Avipattikar Churna 1 tsp -0-1 tsp before meals : helpful if constipation is associated with acidity, gas, or burning.
3 Gandharvahastadi Kashayam 15ml-0-15ml +45ml water after meals : useful in chronic Vata constipation, bloating, and gas.
4 Castor oil (Eranda Taila): 1 tsp with warm milk once in 10â15 days works as a safe purgative.
â DIET MODIFICATION
âď¸Take fiber-rich food like green leafy vegetables, papaya, figs, soaked raisins, apples, and whole grains.
âAvoid excess curd, cheese, dry, fried, and spicy food, as they aggravate constipation.
âď¸Drink warm water frequently, avoid chilled water and aerated drinks.
âď¸At night, taking 1 tsp cowâs ghee in warm milk helps lubricate intestines and promotes smooth evacuation.
â LIFESTYLE AND YOGA
đMaintain regular meal timings and avoid late-night eating. đPractice Pawanmuktasana, Vajrasana (after meals), Malasana, and light walking to improve bowel movements. đManage stress, as anxiety and irregular sleep also disturb digestion.
âNever suppress natural urges of passing stool, urine, or gas.
Long-standing constipation should not be ignored, as it can lead to piles, fissures, or fissure-in-ano.
For chronic constipation, correct use of Triphala, addition of Isabgol or Avipattikar Churna, ghee with warm milk at bedtime, and a fiber-rich diet with adequate hydration are most important.
Wish you a good healthđ
Warm Regards Dr Snehal Vidhate
