The swelling near your mother’s foot joints, especially in absence of pain and normal kidney function, could relate to a condition like varicose veins or lymphedema. From an Ayurvedic perspective, such swelling may be tied to imbalances in Vata and Kapha doshas. Addressing this needs a holistic approach; dietary, lifestyle, and external therapies become important. Here’s detailed guidance to address the condition:

Encouragingly, diet plays a crucial role. Warm, freshly cooked meals with light, easy-to-digest foods would be beneficial. Incorporate mung dal, barley, cooked vegetables, and spices such as ginger and turmeric - which help in reducing inflammation. Avoid cold, heavy, or oily foods as they might aggravate Kapha.

Regarding lifestyle, encourage regular gentle exercises like walking or yoga, which enhance circulation and lymphatic flow. Positions that elevate her legs periodically during the day can also ease the swelling.

Additionally, topical treatments may provide relief. Ayurvedic massages (abhyanga) using warm sesame or mustard oil, focusing on gentle strokes towards the heart, may help move accumulated fluids. Integrating oil pulling with herbal oils in the daily regimen could also support elimination of toxins.

However, with any persistent swelling, especially in aging populations, is worth being examined by a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying circulatory or lymphatic conditions that might require specific medical interventions. Any significant changes or worsening of symptoms should prompt professional medical advice. Remember that while Ayurveda is supportive, it works best in conjunction with mainstream health strategies when needed.

If your mother’s lab tests for liver and kidney function are normal, the swelling around her foot joints might suggest issues unrelated to those organs. One potential cause could be varicose veins or issues related to circulation. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, such conditions often correlate with imbalances in the vata and kapha doshas — which can affect circulation, fluid retention, and joint swelling.

Here are some steps you could consider:

First, promoting circulation is important. Gently massaging the legs with warm sesame oil can help. Do this daily, moving upwards towards the heart, which can assist in improving blood flow and reducing swelling. Make sure the massage is light and comfortable — avoid pressing too hard.

Encourage your mother to slightly elevate her legs whenever she’s resting, this could help reduce swelling by encouraging fluid drainage. Placing a pillow under her feet even when sleeping might be useful.

Dietary adjustments can also play a role. Consuming light and warm foods can be beneficial for balancing vata. Ensure she drinks adequate water, but not excessively at once. Ginger tea can also enhance circulation and help manage the digestive fire, or agni.

Foods that are rich in magnesium and potassium like bananas, almonds, and spinach could be supportive. Salt intake should be moderated as excessive salt can lead to fluid retention.

Consider yoga or gentle leg exercises like calf pumps or ankle circles — these can improve blood circulation in the legs. If swelling persists or worsens, consult a healthcare provider to rule out hidden vascular concerns. It’s essential to ensure there’s no underlying condition that needs immediate attention.
