How to treat varicose veins and tingling sensation in my right leg at 72 years old? - #54229

I am 72 years old. And have developed varicose veins in my right leg. A scan has confirmed that one vein is not functional anymore and surgery or laser has been recommended. Am now wearing compression socks which have helped a lot. At the end of last year my lowers legs and feet were very swollen. This has not happened again. At times I get a tingling sensation in my right lower leg. My functional medicine practitioner has suggested treatment with oral mimosa Pudica which he has successfully used in the past.

How long have you been experiencing the varicose veins?:

- 6 months to 1 year

How would you describe the tingling sensation?:

- Occasional and mild

Have you noticed any changes in your leg swelling since wearing compression socks?:

- Significant improvement

Do you have any other symptoms accompanying the varicose veins?:

- Skin changes (color or texture)

What is your current level of physical activity?:

- Very active (regular exercise)

Have you tried any other treatments for the varicose veins before?:

- No, this is my first treatment

How is your overall digestive health?:

- Occasional issues (bloating, gas)

The faulty vein allows blood to pool downward (gravity effect) This causes swelling, heaviness, skin darkening, and sometimes tingling Compression socks help by pushing blood back upward, which is why you feel better Your symptoms—especially past swelling + skin changes—suggest chronic venous insufficiency, not just cosmetic varicose veins. About Mimosa Pudica (important reality check) Mimosa pudica is traditionally used for gut health, parasites, and mild inflammation There is no strong medical evidence that it can fix damaged leg veins or venous reflux It may help digestion (your bloating/gas), but it won’t correct the non-functional vein So, relying on it as a primary treatment for your veins would be misleading and potentially delaying proper care. What your current symptoms suggest Improved swelling with compression → good sign Tingling → could be mild nerve irritation or circulation changes Skin changes → early warning for complications (like ulcers if ignored) At your age (72), the goal is preventing progression, not just symptom relief. Best treatment approach (balanced, practical) 1. Continue what’s working Compression stockings (daily use, correct pressure level) Regular walking (excellent that you’re active) Elevate legs when resting 2. Consider definitive treatment seriously Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) or radiofrequency ablation Minimally invasive Done under local anesthesia High success rate Faster recovery than traditional surgery 👉 If a vascular surgeon has recommended it, it’s usually because: The vein is already beyond recovery Delaying may worsen skin damage over time 3. Supportive natural / Ayurvedic options (safe additions) These can help symptoms—but not replace procedure: Horse chestnut extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) – improves vein tone Gotu kola (Mandukaparni) – supports circulation Triphala or light digestive support – for your bloating Gentle leg massage with sesame oil (upward strokes only) When to act more urgently Seek prompt medical care if you notice: Increasing skin darkening or hardening Open sores near ankle Sudden increase in swelling or pain Warmth/redness (possible clot)

Thank you very much, very helpful. I am already being treated by a TCM practitioner (herbalist) and my main diagnosis is dampness, blood stasis and kidney yang deficiency which kind of matches with what you say. Will investigate the laser route.

Hello, At 72, managing varicose veins involves balancing circulation while addressing the underlying weakness in the vein walls (Sira-Shaithilya). In Ayurveda, this condition is viewed as Siraja Granthi, primarily caused by aggravated Vata displacing Rakta (blood) and causing it to pool. The tingling sensation (Suptata) in your right leg is a classic sign of Vata disturbance and localized congestion affecting the nerves. Since you are in the Vata stage of life (70+), treatment focuses on ensuring smooth downward flow of energy and blood. Purifying and strengthening the blood vessels to prevent further stagnation and swelling. While compression socks are excellent for mechanical support, Ayurvedic oils help maintain vessel elasticity. Prescription : 1. Sahacharadi Kwath (Tablet/Liquid) This is the premier formulation for conditions involving the lower limbs and veins. It helps reduce the pressure in the veins and alleviates that tingling sensation. Dose: 2 tablets (or 15ml with equal warm water) twice daily, 30 minutes before food. 2. Chiruvilwadi Kwath (Tablet) Specifically used to reduce pressure in the pelvic and lower limb venous systems. It helps prevent the recurrence of the swelling (edema) you experienced last year. Dose: 1 tablet twice daily after food. 3. Pinda Thailam (External Oil) A cooling, Pitta-Vata pacifying oil that is traditionally used when there is “burning” or “tingling” associated with varicose veins. Apply gently in an upward direction (from ankle toward the knee) once daily before a warm bath. Do not apply heavy pressure to the veins.

Thank you very much, very helpful. I assume that I can get these remedies in an ayurvedic health centre? live in London in the UK.

●Main causes • Standing for long periods of time • Obesity • Pregnancy • Genetic factors • Old blood clots • Infrequent movement ●What does Ayurveda say? In Ayurveda, this is called Siragranthi/Siravikriti. This condition is primarily associated with an aggravation of Vata dosha and obstruction of blood flow. Treatment aims to balance Vata and improve blood circulation. ●Ayurvedic Remedy 1. Ashwagandha Powder with Milk: Drink 1 teaspoon of Ashwagandha powder mixed with lukewarm milk before going to bed at night. It reduces nerve weakness, balances Vata, and provides inner strength. Take regularly for at least 60 days. 2. Mandukaparni (Gotu Kola) on an empty stomach in the morning. Take 500 mg of Mandukaparni powder with lukewarm water. It increases nerve elasticity and improves blood flow. Consume regularly for 2-3 months. 3. Use of Garlic Empty stomach in the morning Lightly crush 2 cloves of raw garlic and swallow them with lukewarm water. This thins the blood and prevents clots. 4. Aloe Vera Gel Paste: Apply fresh aloe vera gel to the swollen veins before going to bed. Wash it off after 15-20 minutes. This reduces swelling and irritation. 5. Sesame Oil Massage (Most Important): Apply lukewarm sesame oil every night. Gently massage from the toes to the thighs, from the bottom up, for 5-7 minutes. This helps to circulate stagnant blood upward. ●Lifestyle Improvements • Avoid standing for long periods of time • Walk a little every 30 minutes Elevate your legs while sleeping Pavanmuktasana, Viparita Karani Asana • Bathe with lukewarm water • Eat fiber-rich foods ●Avipattikar Churna 2 teaspoon 2 times empty stomach.

Varicose veins with tingling are described as Siragranthi, caused mainly by Vata imbalance leading to poor circulation, vein weakness, and nerve irritation (causing tingling). 1. Internal Medicines Kaishore Guggulu – improves circulation, reduces inflammation Punarnava Mandur – controls swelling Arjunarishta – strengthens vessels Yograj Guggulu – helpful for tingling (Vata control) 2. External Therapy: Daily gentle massage with warm sesame oil (upward direction only) Use cooling oils like Pinda Taila if burning or skin discoloration present 3. Lifestyle (Most Important): Continue compression stockings (very beneficial in your case) Leg elevation 15–20 min, 2–3 times daily Avoid prolonged sitting/standing Regular walking 4. Diet: Light, warm, easily digestible food Reduce salt, fried, and heavy food Include garlic + fiber to support circulation Correct digestion (reduce gas/bloating → important for Vata balance)
